Paul Chryst joining the staff at Texas as special assistant to head coach Steve Sarkisian

MADISON – Paul Chryst is returning to the world of college football.

Chryst, who was removed as Wisconsin’s head coach on Oct. 2, has accepted a job as special assistant to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

A source close to the UW program confirmed the hire, first reported by Orangebloods, which covers Texas.

Chryst did not return a message left Sunday morning.

Chryst, 57, compiled a record of 43-18 in Big Ten play and 67-26 overall in seven-plus seasons at UW. He was fired less than 24 hours after UW suffered a 34-10 home loss to Illinois on Oct. 1. That loss left UW 0-2 in the Big Ten and 2-3 overall.

Chryst, a native of Madison, had three coaching stints at UW.

He joined Barry Alvarez’s 2002 staff as tight ends coach but left after one season to serve as Oregon State’s offensive coordinator under his longtime friend Mike Riley.

Alvarez brought Chryst back in 2005 as co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Alvarez stepped down at the end of the 2005 season and Chryst served as offensive coordinator under Bret Bielema from 2006 through 2011.

He was the head coach at Pittsburgh from 2012 through 2014 and then returned to UW as head coach after Gary Andersen left for Oregon State.

UW reached the Big Ten title game three times in Chryst’s seven full seasons. The Badgers lost to Penn State in 2016 and to Ohio State in 2017 and 2019.

However, the Badgers finished 6-1 in bowl games under Chryst. The lone loss came to Oregon, 28-27, in the 2020 Rose Bowl.
