Patience will pay off for the Steelers in the free-agent market

The potential salary-cap problems of the Pittsburgh Steelers are no secret. The team continues to work to get down under the salary cap before the start of free agency and this includes players retiring, players who will be released and players who will restructure their contracts.

Pittsburgh has never dove head-first into the free-agent pool so even if money were no object, 2020 wasn’t going to change that. But as we have already seen, teams are absolutely purging their rosters to save money. And this is without even knowing what the final 2021 salary cap will be.

This is a real good news/bad news situation for the Steelers. The bad news is we could see veterans like cornerback Joe Haden and linebacker Vince Williams on the chopping block due to their salaries.

But it also means players signed as free agents this season won’t be able to demand the salary they would have in an offseason where the salary cap is significantly lower.

The Steelers are good about finding a free agent or two after the draft and this time around the market could be even richer without costing them any more money.
