Parrish Community High's Erin Spivey named Softball Coach of the Year in Florida

The awards keep rolling in for the Parrish Community High softball team.

After winning the first state title in program history, Bulls coach Erin Spivey was named the Softball Coach of the Year in a media vote through the Florida Dairy Farmers.

In addition, Parrish Community pitcher Isabella “Isa” Vega was third in the voting for Miss Softball in the state.

In the fourth year of the Bulls’ program, Spivey led Parrish Community to a 24-3 record and the Class 5A state championship with a win over Deltona High on May 25 at Legends Way Ball Fields in Clermont.

Spivey also was named Class 5A Coach of the Year.

“That’s pretty cool,” Spivey said.

Spivey received four first-place votes and 114 total points to edge Spanish River High’s Ashley Byrd, who had 103 points.

Spivey becomes the area’s second winner in the past three years, joining Lakewood Ranch High’s T.J. Goelz and the third area winner overall. Leslie Black of Cardinal Mooney Catholic High won the award in 1995.

Vega, who was named the Herald-Tribune Softball Player of the Year at Wednesday’s Awards Show, received 63 points, including one first-place vote. She also was named the Class 5A Player of the Year.

Bartow High pitcher Katelynn “Red” Oxley won Miss Softball honors with 178 points and 15 of the 20 first-place votes. Jacksonville University Christian junior pitcher/shortstop Sophia Kardatzke was second with 67 points and a first-place vote.

Vega, a University of Central Florida commit, was bidding to become the second area player to win Miss Softball, joining Palmetto High’s Jodi Hughes, who won the fast-pitch award in 1993.

“That’s pretty good for her,” Spivey said on Vega.

In the Class 5A championship game, the right-handed Vega pitched a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks.
