Parker Weir, South Vermillion stun Edgewood in IHSAA baseball sectional semifinals

Home field advantage and what looked like a favorable draw were not enough for Edgewood's baseball team.

The Mustangs ended up needing a lot more offense than they could generate against South Vermillion starter Parker Weir, who dammed up Edgewood well enough over a gutsy 120-pitch, six-inning outing to give the Wildcats a chance to pull off a stunning 7-3 upset win in the semifinals of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional on Thursday.

It stopped an eight-game win streak for the Mustangs (18-6).

A four-run second inning, powered by three walks and an error, gave Weir the cushion he needed with a 5-1 lead. He gave up eight hits and struck out 11, with reliever John Smith fanning two more in the seventh, after walking the first two batters her faced, to stifle the expected rally.

Edgewood went with Ziggy Teran (3-1) on the mound, but he lasted just two innings. Nolan Hudson did a good job stopping the bleeding, giving up just two hits and one run over three innings. Anthony Shields gave up an unearned run in the top of the seventh.

Andrew Good was 2-for-3 and Isaac Lawson was 2-for-4 and Edgewood drew seven walks, scoring single runs in the top of the first, third and fifth innings.

That sets up a title game on Monday at 11 a.m. between the Wildcats (who last won a sectional in Class 2A in 2019) and Northview (16-8), which hammered Indian Creek, 7-1, getting another terrific pitching performance as Brayden Krieger tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
