Panthers TE Hayden Hurst named fantasy sleeper for 2023

Ever since the departure of franchise great Greg Olsen, the tight end position has been frighteningly dormant for the Carolina Panthers. But 2023 may be the season where it finally wakes up.

CBS Sports senior fantasy writer Heath Cummings recently named his second batch of sleepers for the upcoming campaign. Among them is new Panthers tight end Hayden Hurst, who could benefit from his new head coach.

Cummings writes:

Hurst landed in Carolina on a team that has TE-friendly Frank Reich at coach and a whole bunch of question marks at wide receiver. One of the things to look for in a deep sleeper at tight end is someone who could finish first or second on their team in targets. The Panthers situation is one that could lead to that.

Hurst joined Reich and company on a three-year, $21.7 million deal this spring. He’s fresh off one of the better seasons of his five-year career, having reeled in 52 balls for 414 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

And while that relatively low production as well as his recovery from offseason groin surgery may be a cause for concern, the big and athletic tight end—as Cummings notes—could still emerge in a system that takes care of its big and athletic tight ends.
