Panhandle tennis players earn spots at UIL State Tournament

Regional tournaments have been completed in high school tennis and a handful of players from the Panhandle will be making their way to San Antonio compete for state titles.

Here's a look at how Panhandle players fared at regional tournaments.

The UIL State Tournament is scheduled for May 16-17 at various sites in San Antonio.

Class 5A

• Tascosa's Tucker Haynes won a regional playback in boys singles to earn a regional berth, after falling in the final to regional champion Maximus Martin of El Paso High.

• In girls doubles, Amarillo High's Allex Gonzales and Sara Shelhamer combined to win the third place match and then defeated teammates Halle Rose and Morgan Rose in a regional playback 6-4, 6-3 to earn a spot at the state tournament.

Class 4A

• In girls singles, Hereford's Ella Dudley won the regional title with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory against Canyon's Lauren Brooks. Brooks earned the second state qualifying spot.

• In girls doubles, Randall's Kynley Craddock and Gabriella Dishong teamed up to win the regional title, defeating Canyon's Brylee Jesko and Brooke Rebstock 6-3, 6-1. Jesko and Rebstock also earned a spot at the state tournament.

• Randall's Daxon Betzen and Bryson Shelton teamed up to win a regional playback and gain a spot at the state tournament in boys doubles. The duo defeated Canyon's David Eck and Isaac Reynolds 7-5, 6-3 in the playback.

• The Hereford mixed doubles team of Macy Betzen and Brandon Ysaguirre defeated West Plains' Scout Adams and Cooper Richardson, 6-4, 6-2 to win the title in that category. Adams and Richardson also earned a state spot.
