Pak, Main lead Cardinal girls at Lamson Invitational

Apr. 17—WEST DES MOINES — After having a busy weekend due to prom and playing through some tougher conditions on Monday, Newton head girls golf coach Nicole George was impressed at how her squad played during the Lamson Invitational.

Eva Pak and Evie Main both carded career-best scores at the par 73 Willow Creek Golf Course, leading the Cardinals to a 13th-place finish against a field made up mostly of Class 4A programs.

"The girls played fairly well for having a long, busy weekend," George said. "We played about the same as we did last week, which was good considering the weather was quite a bit warmer and the girls had to wait on every hole as there were 17 teams competing."

Evie Main

Newton shot 410 as a team, trailing conference rival Dallas Center-Grimes (404) by six strokes.

Ames cruised to the team title with a 335. Indianola was next with a 356 and the rest of the top five featured Marshalltown (357), Bettendorf (361) and Norwalk (363).

Pak led the Cardinals with a personal-best 95 and Main was just behind her with a career-best 96.

"I was very impressed with Eva Pak and Evie Main, both shooting rounds under 100, which is where we want to be," George said.

Addie Ratcliff

The other two scoring golfers were Addie Ratcliff (109) and Addison Hook (110) and Kalleigh Berndt (111) and Addison Van Maanen (117) turned in non-counting scores.

"We look forward to playing Otter Creek tomorrow," George said. "Historically, this meet has had some inclement weather almost every year so the rain shouldn't be anything new for us at this course."

Marshalltown's Natalie Henson was the meet medalist with a 3-under-par 70.

Emerson Motl of Ames shot a 76 as the runner-up medalist. The Little Cyclones had three other golfers in the 80s.
