Pac-12 draws criticism for possible Apple streaming deal
Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff presented a media rights plan to the nine member schools on Tuesday.
Reports of the possible deal with Apple come less than two weeks after Kliavkoff spoke at the Pac-12 Media Day in Las Vegas and said a deal would be announced soon. Kliavkoff later backtracked on that statement.
The current media deal for the Pac-12 expires on June 30, 2024. The Pac-12 is the only Power Five conference that doesn't have a media deal locked in through at least 2031.
While the schools themselves haven't responded to reports that the deal was with Apple's streaming service, plenty of fans have begun to sound off.
Fans, media react to Pac-12, Apple TV rumors
Would you buy an Apple TV+ subscription to watch Pac-12 games if they became its media partner? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/J7YstoMLpo

If the Pac-12 is going to Apple TV, then media market sizes for expansion candidates don't matter anymore, and the targets should change.
What the Pac-12 needs is schools with die-hard fans willing to pay to watch their team, not a populous market with low-affinity fans.— alexwarneke.bsky.social (@alexwarneke) August 1, 2023
Going all-in on Apple would be a great way for the Pac-12 to utterly disappear from the national consciousness. https://t.co/Jzsmjto09A

PAC 12 meeting about Apple TV deal.
If you sign up and then get a bunch of friends to sign up and then those friends get more friends to sign up we will all be able to watch PAC 12 sports on Apple TV. pic.twitter.com/u1zNfIr45D— Ultracrepidarian (AKA) Know-It-All (@JerThorne) August 1, 2023
The Pac-12 relying on Apple+ subscriptions sounds speculative as hell to me. I hope it works out for the conference, but university leaders tend to gravitate towards stable paydays. General college football fans will watch Pac-12 football if it's on TV. Pay extra for it?

One major negative to an Apple TV deal for the Pac-12 that the powers-that-be haven’t considered is that I would have to explain to my dad how Apple TV works which sounds like an endeavor I do not want to embark on.

The minute Pac 12 Networks is off Xfinity I'm cutting that cord so fast. Gimme Apple TV.

Crunched some numbers here.
Assuming the Pac-12 wants each school to get $31.7 Million per school, and Apple TV introduced an MLS-style season pass, assuming for a cost of $20, with a 60-40 split in revenue going to Apple and the PAC...
They would need ~47,500,000 subs. No way. https://t.co/Et7ocw8A5A— Dylan SuRpLu5 🔜 QuakeCon (@DylanSurplu5) August 1, 2023
I’ve refrained from making comments regarding Pac-12 media rights and realignment up to this point.. but. if what I’m hearing about Apple etc and the $$ amount per school is correct, then let’s pack our bags and head to the Big12. That’s my vote, which counts for zero. 🥴😂

Ok... so, if you wanted to watch all of the P5 games, you'll need Peacock, Apple TV (with the Pac 12 added tier), ESPN+ for streaming...
then you'll need all the ESPNs, FS1, SEC Network, Big Ten Network, ACC Network, etc on cable
then you need CBS, NBC, ABC & FOX...
then for… https://t.co/HJ8Nqjfe49— Gary Segars (@GaryWCE) August 1, 2023
So I pay for Apple+, then pay for the Pac-12 add-on to watch games … the best of which might just wind up a la carte on ESPN, anyway?

If these Pac-12 (9?) media deal leaks are correct then it’s worse than I ever imagined. $20 million per year and all on Apple TV. Horrific for a program like UW. Arizona should bail this week and the conference will formally implode. Bring in the Big-10.

Do you think Apple TV would be a good media partner for the Pac-12?
