Other area Class A and B boys and girls hoops highlights from Jan. 30-Feb. 5

HAMLIN EDUCATION CENTER — Do you want to know which area high school boys basketball team is the best?

The answer is Hamlin, the state's No. 2-rated Class A team. The Chargers have proved it the last two Mondays.

After rolling to a 71-47 win last Monday over No. 2 Class B Castlewood (14-2) on the road, the Chargers came back Monday to blast No. 4 Class A (14-2) 80-48.

Hamlin (13-3) sank Castlewood with a first-half 3-point barrage (11-for-14) and canned 12 more 3's in the win over Sioux Valley. Hamlin led 45-21 at halftime and didn't take long to put a running clock (30-point advantage) into effect against the Cossacks.

Easton Neuendorf scored 20 points, Jackson Wadsworth and Evan Stormo 19 each and Tyson Stevenson 11 for the Chargers, who have two losses to No. 1 Sioux Falls Chrisitian (15-0) and another to a team from Cordova, Tenn.

If Hamlin is on, the Chargers after very capable of making a run at the school's first state championship since 1983.

Hamlin's boys are really good

Neuendorf, a junior guard and son of veteran head coach Todd Neuendorf, sets the pace for the Chargers, who have have a bevy of good shooters and do a good job of moving the ball and finding the open shooter.

Hamlin isn't the biggest team in the state, but they're doing a much better job of defending big men. Last week, it was Castlewood's 6-9 junior Bryon Laue and Monday it was Sioux Valley's 6-10 senior Alec Squires. Squires, a South Dakota State recruit, was limited to seven points by a a team effort on defense led by 6-6 junior Zac VanMeeteren and 6-4 junior Dawson Noem. They got plenty of help from guards, who cracked down on Squires every team he got the ball.

Senior Maxwell Engebretson scored 17 points and junior Maverick Nelson 13 for Sioux Valley, which was unbeaten before suffering two losses in three days.

More than one Sioux Valley-Hamlin game

The Charger and Cossack boys weren't the only ones to square off on Monday. Sioux Valley's boys, despite the loss, are still the No. 1 seed and Hamlin No. 2 in the Region 2A standings. They are the teams likely favored to come out the region to earn spots in SoDak 16 state-qualifying games.

Region 2A in girls isn't so clear-cut. Flandreau (16-0), the new No. 1 team in Class A, currently holds the No. 1 seed followed by Florence-Henry (14-3), defending state champion Hamlin (9-7) and Sioux Valley (11-5).

The Cossacks still trail the Chargers despite winning 42-37 in tight battle on Monday. Sioux Valley led 14-10 after one quarter, 26-20 at hafltime and 31-26 after three quarters before surviving Hamlin's comeback attempt in the final minutes.

Keyra Kruse, a 6-0 junior, scored 15 points and junior guard Isabelle Bloker added 10 for the Cossacks. Kruse also snared nine rebounds. Kailey Cradduck, a 5-10 freshman, added seven points and nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Addison Neuendorf tallied 13 points and senior Musonda Kabwe 12 for Hamlin, which also got eight points and eight rebounds from senior Marissa Bawdon and nine rebounds from 5-10 eighth-grader Addelyn Jensen.

Pay attention to the seeding down the stretch here because No. 4-No. 5 seed winner is going to likely have to go through Flandreau for a SoDak 16 berth. Sure the No. 2-No. 3 matchup would be no picnic but Flandreau has yet to lose.

Castlewood bounced back from the loss to Hamlin by knocking off Dawson-Boyd (19-2), a team that is rated second in the Minnesota Class A poll. The Warriors won 49-46 behind 21 points from Lane Tvedt. Brayson Boike, a 6-foot-7 junior guard who is drawing NCAA Division I attention, had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Blackjacks.

Sisseton's undefeated season and reign as the No. 1 team in Class A girls ended with a 70-62 loss to Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday in the DAK XII-Northeast Conference Clash at Madison. Christian (14-2) moved up to No. 3 in Class A and dropped the Redmen (14-1) to No. 4. Krista Langager finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Sisseton.
