Olentangy Orange, Columbus Academy fall short of OTCA boys tennis state championships

The site changed, but the results were the same as a year ago for central Ohio teams in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association boys state tournament Saturday.

Olentangy Orange reached its second consecutive Division I final but lost to Cincinnati Sycamore 3-0 at the College of Wooster, and Columbus Academy placed third in Division II for the second year in a row.

Orange finished 13-3. Sycamore won its third consecutive OTCA title.

The Pioneers, who reached state for the first time a season ago and fell to the Aviators in the final at New Albany, edged Massillon Jackson 3-2 in a semifinal earlier Saturday.

Orange got wins from Shailen Patel at second singles (6-0, 6-0 over Manav Rawal), Nikhil Bhimireddy at third singles (6-2, 6-1 against Quinn Lokie) and the first doubles team of Devan Patel and Luke Rutherford (6-3, 7-5 over Shiv Nagajothi and Ishan Tripathy).

Doubles teams lead Columbus Academy to third place

Academy won three of four doubles matches on the day, including both courts in a 3-2 win over Lexington in the third-place match.

Ian Chang and Rowen Lo edged Karl Etzel and Cooper Remy 7-5, 7-6 at first doubles, and at second doubles, Nason Lo and Jayden Tsao beat Phil Etzel and Jake Halfhill 6-2, 6-4.

The Vikings’ other win came at first singles, where Lucas Xue outlasted Ethan Remy 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Catanese and Ethan Remy won the Division II state doubles title Friday in the OHSAA individual tournament at Wooster.

Academy (16-5) lost to eventual champion Cincinnati Indian Hill 3-1 in a semifinal.

The Vikings’ win came at first doubles, where Chang and Rowen Lo swept Ishan Bhatt and Gabe Guiler 6-2, 6-2.

Indian Hill defeated Pepper Pike Orange 3-0 in the final to win its second title in three seasons.
