OU softball rolls past Kansas as Sooners pitcher Kelly Maxwell nearly no-hits Jayhawks

Kelly Maxwell was one out away from a no-hitter.

But OU’s ace recovered from a late home run to finish off the complete game as the Sooners stayed perfect in Big 12 play with a 6-1 win over Kansas on Thursday in Lawrence, Kansas.

The Sooners (32-1, 10-0 Big 12) have won 14 consecutive games.

Maxwell (10-0) has thrown five previous no-hitters, including one March 12 against Tarleton State.

She finished with nine strikeouts and four walks.

Maxwell’s dominance continued to start the seventh, striking out the first two batters before Campbell Bagshaw drove Maxwell’s 1-1 out to center to end the no-hit bid.

After a walk, Maxwell got a groundout to end the game.

The Sooners got on the board quickly, with a two-run home run from Tiare Jennings after Jayda Coleman led off the game with a single.

The homer was Jennings’ team-leading 13th of the season.

OU added three more in the second, starting the inning similarly with a Rylie Boone single followed by Cydney Sanders’ home run to left.

The home run was Sanders’ 11th of the season.

Two batters later, Kasidi Pickering delivered an RBI single to score Riley Ludlam.

OU added another in the third on Alynah Torres’ solo home run.

Torres now has a hit in 14 of her last 16 games.

Coleman finished 2 for 3 while Pickering also had two hits.

Kinzie Hansen, who has missed time lately with a knee injury, had two at-bats, recording her first hit since March 15.

The series continues with a 5 p.m. game Friday followed by a noon Saturday series finale.
