Ohio State ended Maryland's win streak at Ohio Stadium, beating the Terrapins 37-17.

Trailing 17-10 early in the third quarter, the Buckeyes used 27 unanswered points in the second half to hand Maryland its ninth loss in nine games against Ohio State since the Terrapins' arrival to the Big ten in 2014.

Fielding came in with four field-goal makes this season, including a long of 40 yards.

Marvin Harrison scores a touchdown, Marvin Harrison scores a touchdown - OSU 34, Maryland 17

OSU has been whistled for 10 penalties for 81 yards.

Big plays make up for Ohio State miscues - OSU 27, Maryland 17

OSU failed to recognize a blitz and Kyle McCord took an 18-yard loss as a result. Coach Ryan Day was penalized 10 yards for sideline interference. However, Marvin Harrison Jr. made a 37-yard catch and then Cade Stover made a 22-yard touchdown reception. The Buckeyes' scoring drive had a little bit of everything.

Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka helped off

OSU receiver Emeka Egbuka tried to limp off the field but couldn't make it, eventually sitting down and beckoning the medical staff. Athletic trainers appear to have examined his shin/calf before assisting him to the sideline.

Egbuka's stats before leaving: three catches for 40 yards and one rush for 3 yards.

Ohio State converts on fourth down en route to field goal - Ohio State 20, Maryland 17

Ohio State has taken its first lead of the day thanks in part to a Chip Trayanum 1-yard run on fourth down and a Cade Stover 22-yard catch. Jayden Fielding's 24-yard field goal is ultimately what put OSU in front.

Ohio State's Lathan Ransom intercepts Taulia Tagovailoa

Stretching high into the air, Lathan Ransom picked off a pressured Taulia Tagovailoa, who was rolling out to escape the Buckeyes' defense. It's OSU's second interception of the day.

Ohio State's Chip Trayanum runs for a touchdown - Ohio State 17, Maryland 17

OSU's Chip Trayanum just ran for a 4-yard touchdown, on a day when OSU has otherwise struggled to run the ball, averaging just 1.2 yards per rush.

In fact, the Buckeyes set up that TD largely by passing the ball. Emeka Egbuka made a 19-yard catch and Julian Fleming dove and, from on his back, caught a 37-yard toss from Kyle McCord that would have been a touchdown had it been on target.

Taulia Tagovailoa and Terrapins go back in front - Maryland 17, Ohio State 10

Taulia Tagovailoa completed passes of 12 and 23 yards before ultimately rushing for a 9-yard touchdown during Maryland's opening drive of the second half.

Ohio State Jayden Fielding ties the game - OSU 10, Maryland 10

OSU opted to take three points after an intentional grounding penalty. Jayden Fielding is now 5 for 5 this season, with the Ohio State kicker just converting from 36 yards. Marvin Harrison Jr. made catches for 58 and 18 yards to set up the field goal. The 58-yard pass was slightly underthrown or it would have almost certainly gone on all the way. Nevertheless, it was a spark plug OSU desperately needed.

Ohio State's defense also did their part, with J.T. Tuimoloau sacking Taulia for a 10-yard loss to help force a Maryland punt.

Another punt for Ohio State

Ohio State's last four drives have all ended with punts. (Jesse Mirco is averaging 43 yards with a long of 48.) Kyle McCord is 6 of 13 for 49 yards, and the Buckeyes are averaging 1.8 yards per carry on 12 rushes. To say the offense looks disjointed would be more than fair.

Josh Proctor gives Ohio State football pick-six - Maryland 10, OSU 7

Ohio State finally gets on the board, but it's thanks to the defense. Safety Josh Proctor jumped the route, grabbed the ball and ran it back 24 yards for a Buckeyes' touchdown. It's OSU's third defensive score this season.

Ohio State football offense stopped ... again

Maybe the one thing that could be said about the OSU offense is that its line had yet to commit a penalty. That, however, is no longer the case after several of the players up front jumped offside during the Buckeyes' most recent drive. Matt Jones was the one the officials flagged. Ohio State gives the ball back to the Terps after 4 plays for 13 yards, and they are now getting outgained 140-46.

Ohio State defense holds Terps to a field goal - Maryland 10, OSU 0

Maryland couldn't punch the ball into the end zone despite having the ball at the 2-yard line on second down. But they still extended the lead with Jack Howes' 21-yard field goal.

OSU's Ryan Day speaks to offensive line

Per 97.1 The Fan sideline reporter Matt Andrews, during the break between quarters, Ohio State football coach Ryan Day gave the offensive line a talking to. That was followed by quarterback Kyle McCord and tight end Cade Stover addressing the linemen.

Ohio State offense struggling early

Through their first three drives, OSU's offense has just 28 yards of offense. In fact, their most recent drive traveled -14 yards. Emeka Egbuka was whistled for a holding penalty and Kyle McCord was sacked for an 8-yard loss before the Buckeyes punted the ball away.

Ohio State takes over on downs

On fourth down, Maryland backup quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was stopped shy of the 1 yard the Terrapins needed to gain by Tommy Eichenberg and J.T. Tuimoloau. Ohio State takes over at their own 29.

Punting an adventure early during Ohio State's football game

Ohio State got a punt off on their second drive of the game. This time, the miscue was by the Terrapins, but when Jeshaun Jones muffed the ball at the 15, teammate Dante Trader, Jr. recovered it at the 21.

Ohio State football game postponed by drone

Ohio State and Maryland players were very briefly sent to their respective sidelines before the referee announced, "The drone has been removed. Here we go."

It should be noted, the NCAA actually has a policy regarding drones: "Drones are not allowed over the field or the team area when squad members are present within the playing enclosure.  Outside the limit lines, game management (or conference policy) will govern drone activity.  This governance includes all FAA, state, and local laws including campus policy where appropriate."

Taulia Tagovailoa leads Terps to early TD - Maryland 7, OSU 0

Starting at the Ohio State 30-yard line, Maryland needed just four plays to score with Taulia Tagovailoa capping the scoring drive with a 15-yard pass to Kaden Prather.

Maryland Ohio State stopped on fake punt

Ohio State started running back Chip Trayanum with TreVeyon Henderson out. But the Buckeyes tried to pass on third-and-2. Failing to convert, they ran a fake punt on the next play, direct-snapping the ball to Cody Simon. He was stuffed short, and Maryland will start its first offensive drive with a short field to work with.

Maryland wins the coin toss, Ohio State starts on offense

Ohio State will start on offense against Maryland Saturday. The Buckeyes lost the coin toss, and Maryland elected to defer.

Did 'College GameDay' pick Ohio State vs. Maryland?

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, Maryland has not beaten Ohio State.

And ahead of an undefeated meeting between the Buckeyes and the Terrapins Saturday, the "College GameDay" team doesn't think Maryland will end that streak.

"They got a puncher's chance," former Michigan wide receiver Desmond Howard said, crediting Maryland's "explosive" offense. "But they won't win this game. Ohio State will win this game, but they won't cover."

Here's how the 'College GameDay' team picked Ohio State vs. Maryland:

  • Lee Corso: Ohio State

  • Kirk Herbstreit: Ohio State

  • Pat McAfee: Ohio State

  • Desmond Howard: Ohio State

  • Baker Mayfield: Ohio State

Maryland vs. Ohio State game spread

Heading into Saturday’s matchup between Ohio State vs. Maryland, the Buckeyes are 17-point favorites per BetMGM. The over/under is set at 56.5 points.

What is a Maryland ‘Terrapin’?

According to the school, former football coach Dr. H. Curley Byrd recommended that the diamondback terrapin be named as the school's athletic team name. The diamondback terrapin is Maryland's state reptile.

A terrapin is a turtle native to Chesapeake Bay. The University of Maryland has two terrapin bronze statues on its campus: one overlooking the McKeldin Mall by the McKeldin Library, and the other placed outside of the Football Complex locker room by SECU Stadium.

How is Maryland coach Mike Locksley preparing to face Ohio State?

For Mike Locksley and Maryland football, nothing changes during Ohio State week.

“We don’t need to play the fight song in the locker room this week,” Locksley told reporters Wednesday. “This isn’t one of those weeks where gimmicks are going to get the job done. For us, it’s about earning the respect we feel we deserve.”

Since their last loss to the Buckeyes Nov. 19, the Terrapins have tried to earn that respect back.

Maryland ended the 2022 season with wins against Rutgers and North Carolina State before it started 2023 with five wins against Towson, Charlotte, Virginia, Michigan State and Indiana. Locksley’s team sits right on the outside of both the latest Associated Press and US LBM Coaches polls at No. 26.

But with a trip to Columbus looming Saturday, Locksley said he’s not going to make the game bigger than it is.

“It’s not the Super Bowl as we prepare,” Locksley said. “As I say each week, it’s Terps vs. Terps more than it is about our opponent. And I think it will be even more so this week as we prepare because, as I told our staff, it’s our job to prepare to put our players in the best position from a game plan standpoint. But ultimately, it’s going to come down to players making plays. We’ve got some talented players in our locker room, and big-time players show up in big-time games.”

Ohio State vs. Maryland game predictions

Here’s how the Columbus Dispatch sees Saturday’s game going:

  • Bill Rabinowitz: Ohio State 45, Maryland 28

Maryland came close to ending its losing streak to Ohio State in 2018, losing 52-51 and failing to complete a two-point conversion to beat the Buckeyes in overtime.

Since Maryland's 2018 loss, Ohio State has outscored the Terrapins 182-61 in their last three meetings.

TreVeyon Henderson still stretches with running backs before Ohio State vs. Maryland.

TreVeyon Henderson will not play Saturday as Ohio State takes on Maryland. But the running back is still on the field warming up with the running backs.
