Ohio State football running back TreVeyon Henderson held out in win over Maryland

Running back TreVeyon Henderson, who led Ohio State in rushing through the first month of the season, was held out of Saturday's 37-17 win over Maryland with an unspecified injury.

He was among six scholarship players who were listed as out on the Buckeyes’ pregame availability report released two hours ahead of kickoff.

Coach Ryan Day did not address the nature of Henderson’s injury, but said he expected him to return next week.

"The decision was made to hold him this week," Day said, "and make sure that he's full-go next week, because we know we got a lot of football ahead of us."

Henderson missed five games last season because of a broken bone in his left foot that required surgery in December before making a full recovery.

Though he was held out, Henderson moved well enough on the field that he caught passes with the running backs and receivers and did some light stretching in an early round of warmups.

Henderson rushed for a season-high 104 yards in the Buckeyes’ 17-14 win at Notre Dame two weeks ago, including a 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Buckeyes turned to Chip Trayanum, who was the primary complement to Henderson in the early weeks and ran in for the game-winning touchdown at the goal line against the Irish, to start. Trayanum rushed for 61 yards on 20 carries.

Coach Ryan Day said earlier this week that Miyan Williams was also up for a larger role against the Terrapins following a good week of practice. Williams led the Buckeyes in rushing last season while Henderson was hampered by his injured foot, but has been the effective third back this fall.

When Day spoke about Williams’ role expanded this week, he had not indicated that it was a result of any depth concerns or injuries.

The Buckeyes are deep in the backfield with five scholarship running backs and have enough options that Dallan Hayden, who ran 27 times for 146 yards in last season’s win at Maryland, has not carried the ball this year.

Henderson was not the only addition to the unavailable list as sophomore cornerback Jyaire Brown was also ruled out. A reserve in the secondary, Brown played 22 snaps in nonconference wins over Western Kentucky and Youngstown State.

Cameron Martinez, a backup nickel cornerback who was sidelined at Notre Dame, is available Saturday.

There was also no setback for star wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who sprained his right ankle against the Irish. Harrison did not miss a series in the comeback and practiced this week with the expectation of being available against the Terrapins.

He described his ankle sprain as more severe than the one he dealt with last season, but said it was “good enough.”

Wide receiver Kyion Grayes, linebacker Arvell Reese, defensive lineman Will Smith and linebacker Kourt Williams remain unavailable.
