Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 2? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games
It's Week 2 of the high school football season, and once again there was Thursday night action in central Ohio.
Photographer Adam Cairns was at Eastmoor Academy for the Warriors' 28-14 win over KIPP Columbus. Our Week 1 coverage also included a Thursday night contest, with East beating Dayton Meadowdale 36-6.
Friday night's Week 2 coverage included Grove City-Hilliard Davidson and the first meeting between Upper Arlington and Big Walnut. We also visited Thomas Worthington, where the Cardinals honored one of their all-time greats.
On Saturday afternoon, we wrapped up our live Week 2 coverage with Northland visiting Whitehall-Yearling.
Saturday quick hits
Northland 57, Whitehall-Yearling 29
Tied at 22 at halftime, Northland took command in the second half to even its record at 1-1. The Vikings scored the first 28 points of the half, with Zion Moffett's 35-yard punt return and 34-yard reception from quarterback Charles Woodfork Jr. accounting for the first two touchdowns. Amir Brown rushed for 135 yards on 15 carries to lead Northland, which finished with 231 yards on the ground. Woodfork rushed for 61 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown. “I asked, 'Where are my dogs?' ” Northland coach Ryan Sayers said of his halftime message. “I kept asking them at halftime, 'Where are my dogs? What are you going to sacrifice for the guy next to you?' That was our main focus this week and our kids did that. They did a phenomenal job.”
Coming off a 41-19 loss to Hamilton Township, Whitehall held leads of 15-8 and 22-15 against Northland. Dwayne Jacobs pulled in touchdown catches of 19 yards from Andre Jackson and 20 yards from Devaunte Lane to highlight the Rams' first half.

Friday night quick hits
Upper Arlington 41, Big Walnut 14
Golden Bears coach Justin Buttermore stressed incremental improvement more than the scoreboard, but Friday night’s domination of the host Golden Eagles showed that UA (2-0) might have some of the dominant traits that took it to the Division I, Region 3 championship in 2021. While the defense forced three first-half turnovers to help build a 27-0 lead, Connor McClellan rushed for 217 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. The 6-foot, 200-pound senior had four runs of 21 yards or more, scoring from 7 yards early in the first quarter and on a 63-yard scamper in the fourth, his final play of the night. “The line was firing off and creating huge holes, so I don’t have to do too much with them up front,” McClellan said. “We ran it down their throats in the second half. I’m very proud of this team. This is a big step up.”
McClellan was hardly the only star. Tommy Janowicz recovered an early fumble at strong safety, then in the second quarter at quarterback — where he rotates with Kyle Cox — oversaw a scoring drive that made it 21-0 and scored from 7 yards on the next drive. Jake Braun and Zach Corna intercepted Big Walnut quarterback Jake Nier, and the defense as a whole held standout running back Nate Severs to 57 yards on 17 carries. “It is a team game and our defense just executed better than their offense,” Janowicz said. “Kyle is better than me at passing and I think I’m a pretty good runner. It’s a good rotation.”
Not to be lost in any individual performances is that UA converted its first five third downs, and two of those plays were touchdown passes from Cox to Sam Tongol (9 yards) and Wally Swiney (31). The latter came on third-and-16. “We had some mistakes early, but we did a good job of getting out of trouble,” Buttermore said. “Converting those third-downs, getting scores and stops early and creating turnovers, we were able to capitalize on their mistakes.”
Big Walnut coach Curtis Crager rued his team’s mistakes as it fell to 0-2. In addition to the turnovers, the Eagles had two plays of 20 or more yards negated by holding calls. The highlights came late in the second quarter, when Nier hit Brody Hatfield on a crossing route for a 58-yard touchdown to break the shutout, and in the third when Nier scored on a 39-yard run. Big Walnut forced a punt late in the first half and took over on UA’s 25, but Braun intercepted Nier on third down. “We are green in a lot of spots and it showed,” Crager said. “We have to grow up in a hurry. We have to stay together.”

Hilliard Davidson 48, Grove City 21
Davidson led from start to finish in its 10th consecutive win against the Dawgs. The second half was played with a running clock on two occasions. The Wildcats lead the series 47-32, and Davidson has outscored the Dawgs 266-62 during its winning streak with four shutouts. Grove City’s last win came in 2014 (6-0). “There was something in the air with our kids,” Davidson coach Jeremey Scally said. “I don’t know if it was maturity. I don’t know what the exact word is, but our kids were not surprised. I wasn’t nervous mainly because how this particular team prepares. Led by our seniors, they’re all in.”
The Wildcats relied on their trademark ground attack, led by Keevin Gibbon, who rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Johnny DiBlasio completed 3 of 3 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 86 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown, on four carries. “I thought it was going to be closer,” DiBlasio said. “We knew all week they were going to be tough. They score a lot of points. We knew on offense we were going to have to score a lot of points.” Davidson rushed for 328 yards and five touchdowns on 39 carries.
Senior twins Turner and Davis Schmidt and their sophomore brother, Dayne, played roles in the win. Leading 17-0 in the second quarter, Davis forced a fumble by Grove City quarterback Matthew Papas, with Turner returning it 64 yards to the Dawgs’ 1-yard line. Gibbon scored on the next play for a 24-0 lead. Davis added a blocked punt, leading to Gibbon’s 8-yard TD run in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 41-7. Dayne also rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Papas led Grove City, completing 16 of 33 passes for 222 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. J.J. King caught both scoring passes. “We had a bad start offensively and that set the tone for the rest of the game,” Grove City coach Greg Waits said. “We’re a lot better than that. We’ll learn from this. We’ll get a lot better from this loss. They didn’t do anything that we didn’t expect. We just didn’t execute offensively to start the game. We fell behind and everything snowballed from there.”

Thomas Worthington 28, Worthington Kilbourne 9
Thomas presented a No. 3 jersey to the family of Dimitrious Stanley, a 1993 graduate and former Ohio State wide receiver who died of cancer in February at age 48. During the ceremony, Thomas players stood on the north 40-yard line and Kilbourne players stood on the south 35. "I know Dimitrious just loved his community so much," said his wife, Jessica. "Everyone was considered family to him."
Thomas' Week 1 stars delivered again. Isaiah Bowers rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and Maddox LaPrad kicked field goals of 42 and 39 yards. Last week, LaPrad’s 24-yard field goal with 22 seconds remaining lifted the Cardinals over Beechcroft 27-26, and Bowers ran for 156 yards and two scores. Also Friday for Thomas, Grey Kegley completed 17 of 25 passes for 191 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Both scoring passes went to Aiden Llewellyn, who had seven catches for 110 yards.
—Andy Resnik
St. Charles 37, Beechcroft 18
St. Charles is off to its first 2-0 start since 2019 with a win over the host Cougars. “It is a good start, but it is a long season (and) we have a lot of improving to do,” St. Charles coach Deke Hocker said. “Our guys have found ways to win as a team through all phases — offense, defense and special teams. We will continue to work to get better ... in practice as we head into Week 3.”
Ryan Mooney completed 11 of 14 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals. He also rushed for 45 yards and one score. Aidan Fox rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and added two receptions for 45 yards. Colin Greenhalge's two catches both went for touchdowns (57 and 46 yards).

Hamilton Township 57, Lancaster 36
The host Rangers scored the final 21 points of the game to improve to 2-0. Running back Nadir Langston scored the final three touchdowns on runs of 6 and 34 yards and an 11-yard reception from quarterback Josh Woods. Langston turned in a five-touchdown performance. He rushed for 160 yards and three scores on 20 carries and caught four passes for 67 yards and two scores. Woods completed 25 of 32 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns, and Jovon McBride caught 12 passes for 171 yards and two scores. Brady Holt added seven receptions for 101 yards.
Lancaster's offense also put up impressive rushing stats. Gunner Richards had 127 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, Xavier Goss rushed 10 times for 95 yards and a score and Cole Dickerson ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts.
Newark 35, Mount Vernon 28
Steele Meister tossed a school-record five touchdown passes, and the Wildcats moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2016 with a comeback win against the visiting Yellow Jackets. Meister threw touchdowns of 14 yards to Drayson Peterson, 25 yards to Carson Burnett, 8 yards to Braelen Stephens and 11 and 7 yards to Preston Lunsford. The scores to Lunsford tied the game at 28 and gave Newark the lead with 8:16 to play. "Our offensive line gave me all the time to do my job, and our defense stood up when we needed them most," said Meister, who finished 18 of 25 for 205 yards.
Mount Vernon’s Jonny Askew rushed for 185 yards and two scores on 21 carries and took a swing pass 72 yards to the 12 to set up a potential tying touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Newark’s defense held. On fourth-and-13, junior strong safety Kalen Winbush dragged down receiver Ayden Kennedy 7 yards shy of a first down. "Askew can get the job done against any school they face," Winbush said. "We game-planned for him all week, and in the moment, he got his. But in the end, we got ours, and were able to put that rabbit in the box."
