Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 10? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games

It felt like the entire central Ohio high school football community had been counting down to the Week 10 battle of unbeatens between Pickerington North and Gahanna Lincoln. North's coach confirmed as much, telling our Dave Purpura that he and his players had heard rumblings since mid-September.

Purpura and photographer Graham Stokes covered Friday night's showdown at Gahanna. Frank DiRenna also was in Gahanna, specifically at Columbus Academy, to cover the Vikings' matchup against Ready.

Friday quick hits

Gahanna Lincoln 35, Pickerington North 28 (2OT)

  • Billed as the first battle of 9-0 teams from central Ohio in seven years and the first such game pitting two Division I teams in 24 years, certainty in the outcome swayed several times before Gahanna linebacker Terrell Holcomb’s interception of Landon O’Connell at the goal line in the second overtime finally sealed the outcome. After star running back Diore Hubbard scored from 9 yards on Gahanna’s possession, O’Connell heaved the ball toward the center of the end zone on third-and-8 at the 18, where Holcomb was waiting to make his first interception of the season and seal Gahanna’s first 10-0 regular season since 1998. “I was waiting to make sure the running back didn’t spill out away from me and I saw that I was free and (O’Connell) threw it my way,” Holcomb said. “I knew it would be a dogfight. We had to fight the whole way. That was expected. We gave everything we had.”

  • Hubbard finished with 264 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries, including a 50-yard run late in the first half and a 60-yard sprint early in the fourth to help turn the tide, moments after Gahanna’s goal-line stand kept its deficit at 21-7. The West Virginia commit scored from 1 yard to cap that possession and nearly scored the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds of regulation, but fumbled near the goal line and North defensive lineman Angelo McCollum recovered. “As long as you stay calm and don’t let the moment overcome you, you’ll be fine,” Hubbard said. “The defense has bailed us out all year and when I get in the open space, I just go. You always have to just turn the page (after a mistake). I’m not supposed to fumble. I’ll get after it this week and clean that up.”

  • The win also clinched a second consecutive OCC-Ohio championship for Gahanna. Whether it will be enough for the Lions to overtake Hilliard Bradley for the top seed in Division I, Region 3 was not immediately known after the game. The Jaguars’ 14-7 loss to Dublin Coffman, their first of the season, opened the door for that possibility.

  • Gahanna quarterback Brennen Ward threw two touchdown passes, one to Cameron Frazier from 42 yards early in the second quarter to tie it at 7 and another to tight end Tayshawn Parm in the first overtime to answer Dorian Hamilton’s 5-yard scoring run.

  • North had plenty of its own big plays, including Jaiden Vital’s 77-yard touchdown catch from O’Connell on the first play of the second half and Tank Washington’s 98-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave the Panthers a 21-7 advantage with 9:38 left in the third quarter. But in the immediate aftermath, coach Nate Hillerich rued not scoring from the 1-yard line early in the fourth quarter, a moment that ultimately turned the tide of the game. “We have to find a way there,” Hillerich said. “They converted some big fourth-downs all game, especially in overtime. This is the one of those where you’re playing for a championship, but now we have to regroup for a playoff run. Classic game right there.”

Ready 28, Columbus Academy 7

  • Led by junior running back Kentrell Rinehart, Ready captured the first Central Buckeye League title and handed host Academy its first loss. Rinehart rushed for 341 yards and three touchdowns on 43 carries to pace the Silver Knights’ offense. He scored on runs of 1, 66 and 22 yards. “This is definitely a win for the program and the senior class,” Rinehart said. “We come from humbling experiences and it’s just great to finally be able to compete in a league and finally win one, especially the first one ever.” Before joining the new CBL, Ready had been an auxiliary member of the MSL-Ohio since 2017, but its games didn't count in the league standings.

  • While Ready's offense did most of its damage on the ground, it also displayed an opportunistic passing attack, highlighted by Jacob Cheatham’s 76-yard touchdown to Dalton Miller in the third quarter to close the scoring.

  • Academy (9-1, 3-1) trailed just 14-7 at halftime. Early in the second quarter, Justin Alpert leaped over defenders near the line of scrimmage on his way to 65-yard touchdown to cut the deficit in half. “Our kids didn’t quit,” Vikings coach Robin Miller said. “They kept fighting. It was close. It was a few inches here and there, and that’s life sometimes. Sometimes things don’t go your way and you have to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves. Now, it’s just get back to work and get ready for the postseason.”

  • Ready (9-1, 4-0) regained control in third quarter, as it recovered a short kick to open the half with Rinehart following with a 22-yard touchdown run. The Knights limited Academy to minus-1 yard on two possessions in the third quarter.

  • Both teams will now prepare for the postseason, with each expecting a first-round home playoff game. Ready is in Division IV, Region 15 and Academy is in Division V, Region 19. “This was our goal in the summer,” Ready coach T.J. Burbridge said of the league title. “We talked about it during our team-bonding activities, but after that we really didn’t talk about it that much. We just wanted to go 1-0 each week. That’s our goal. We want to be 1-0 every week. I want to keep it going. We’re not done yet.”
