Who's No. 1? Top-ranked football teams from final Associated Press state poll playing in Canton
With six No. 1 teams from the final AP state poll playing for championships this weekend in Canton, there was no shortage of heavyweights on hand. Here's a look at the six:
St. Edward, in Division I
Massillon, in Division II
Toledo Central Catholic, in Division III
Lake County Perry, in Division V
Kirtland, in Division VI
Marion Local, in Division VII
And in all six games, the poll voters got it right. No. 1-ranked teams went 6-0 over the weekend.
The lone No. 1-ranked team to not reach Canton is Clinton-Massie in Division IV. After a 10-0 regular season, the Falcons were knocked off 21-3 by Kettering Alter in the regional semifinals. Alter lost 38-3 Glenville in the D-4 title game Saturday night. Clinton-Massie won a D-4 state title in 2021 in Canton.

2023 Ohio high school football teams seeking undefeated 16-0 seasons
Five teams arrived in Canton looking to finish off an unbeaten season by becoming a state champion. Each day of the finals featured at least one of the 15-0 teams:
No. 1 Massillon in Division II on Thursday night
No. 1 Toledo Central Catholic in Division III on Friday afternoon
No. 1 Maria Stein Marion Local in Division VII on Saturday morning
No. 1 Perry and No. 2 Liberty Center in Division V on Saturday afternoon
Massillon reached 16-0 on Thursday night becoming the fifth Ohio team do that in a season. Toledo Central Catholic joined the Tigers on Friday afternoon, and Marion Local (again) and Perry followed suit Saturday afternoon. Perry spoiled Liberty Center's pursuit of perfection. That gives Ohio eight 16-0 teams with six programs achieving the feat. Marion Local has done it three times.
Last year, South Range joined Marion Local in going 16-0. Glenville finished the season 15-0 with its title.
In 2021, Chardon and Marion Local became the first Ohio high school football teams to finish a season 16-0.
While not seeking perfection, Springfield tried to go from a 5-5 team in the regular season to a state champion in Division I when it met No. 1 St. Edward on Friday night. But despite a 21-point second quarter by Springfield, it lost to St. Ed's for a third straight year in the title game.
