OFA sweeps SR in hoops; Canton, Gouverneur win

Dec. 20—A slew of season high scoring outputs and solid team defensive play carried both the OFA Girls and OFA Boys Basketball teams to NAC Central Division wins over Salmon River on Tuesday.

The Lady Devils, who host Malone tonight, gained their second division win answering a fourth quarter challenge by the Shamrocks to gain a 41-31 home victory. The Devil Boys jumped out to a 24-11 lead in the first quarter to gain their first win under first year coaches Wes McDonald and John Reed in a 81-34 decision at Salmon River.

In two other Boys Central action Canton won an intense duel of division unbeatens 47-42 and Gouverneur dropped Norwood-Norfolk 83-19.

OFA 41 — Salmon River 31: Amya LaFlair spent a lot of time in the first half distributing the ball looking toget her first year varsity teammates involved in the offense. When visiting Shamrocks mounted a third quarter comeback reducing a 17-10 halftime deficit to 27-25 the Devils' talented eighth grade guard went into an attack-the-basket mode. She scored 17 of her 22 points in the second half, made 14 of 17 free throws with eight rebounds and two assists.

She scored 10 points in the fourth quarter where SR's Adrienne Bill also scored 10 points and hit her second 3-pointer to cut the difference to 32-31 with 3:45 to play. LaFlair answered with six straight points and the Devils held the Shamrocks scoreless over the remainder of the game.

"We built a lead and Amya was looking to set up the other girls but Salmon River played hard and came back. We played hard but turned the ball over and didn't recognize their shooters well," said OFA Coach Shannon LaFave.

"But we finished strong on defense and got the win."

Carlee Thompson scored the game's final four points and finished with an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double. Julia Doser, Meriam Skamperle and Julia Ives all scored two points and Ireland McNally and Sky Barr combined for six and four rebounds.

Kaidence Sunday led Salmon River with 12 points, Taya Ransom tallied six and Ariyah LaFrance added one.

OFA 81 — SR 34: The trio of Jack Pike (6 3s 24 points), Blake Morrill (5 3s 25 points) and Will Graveline (2 3s 6 points) combined for 13 3-pointers and 55 points for the Blue Devils who broke out to a 24-11 lead and ran off a 25-9 third quarter surge after SR controlled the second quarter 19-13.

Noah White and Grady Pharoah combined for eight and seven points, Ian Rose and Lucca LaBella netted four points and Andrew Loffler chipped in three.

Edward Jacobs led Salmon River with 11 points followed by Landon David with nine, Cruz Gibson with seven and Tahar Lazore with six.

OFA JVs 54 — Salmon River 17: Urijah Austin and Rainer McCallus combined for 12 and 10 points leading the OFA JVs followed by Cam Cree with seven and Trenton Power and Trenton Johnson with six points apiece. Other scoring came from: Will LaFlair (3), Gabe Ortega (3), Dempsey Sutton (3), Evan Nelson (2) and Noah Jones (2). Alex Redmond scored seven points for SR.

Canton 46 — Potsdam 42: A 15-7 advantage in the second quarter proved to be decisive for the Bears who received high-efficiency offensive efforts from Ryan Jones and Talon Green. Jones scored a game-high 26 points hitting six of seven field goals, passing out six assists and grabbing five rebounds. He scored nine of his team's 11 points in the first quarter and buried two 3s in the second quarter where John Wilcox also scored six points. Green scored six points on 3-4 shooting and controlled six rebounds, Jackson Ames scored four points with 10 rebounds and Zadok Roiger also scored four points.

Ian VanWagner scored 23 points for Potsdam and Brodey Delaney and Theo Hughes combined for 12 and seven points.

Gouv 83 — N-N 19: Raine Rumble tallied 18 points in the first quarter and went on to a 48-point effort for the Wildcats who also received seven points from Cael Denesha, Brodie Burns and Will Riutta. Other scoring came from: Gunner Simmons (2), Ashton Currier (2), Kaleb Platt (4), Konnor Mandigo (2) and Ayden Lumley (2).

Matt Richards scored nine points for N-N and Login Baxter tallied eight.
