Oakland-Siegel rivalry tops Murfreesboro area high school football games for Week 7

Murfreesboro area high school football teams will have a mix of Thursday and Friday games during Week 7 as most teams prepare for fall break and an open date in Week 8.

Following are previews of area games, including score predictions by The Daily News Journal's Cecil Joyce:

Game of the Week

Oakland (5-1, 2-0 3-6A) at Siegel (4-2, 1-1)

When: 7 p.m., Thursday

The No. 2-ranked Patriots are riding a four-game winning streak, including back-to-back region wins by a combined 77-7. Siegel has lost two in a row, including falling 24-21 to Blackman last week. Daune Morris has 635 yards rushing, 261 yards receiving and 14 total touchdowns for Oakland while Ashton Jones has 719 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Senior QB Thomas Santel has 1,156 yards passing and 13 TDs while rushing for 712 yards and eight touchdowns.

Joyce's pick: Oakland 42, Siegel 14.

Cane Ridge (1-5) at Riverdale (4-2)

When: 7 p.m., Thursday

The Ravens got their first win last week, shutting down La Vergne 3-0. However, they haven't scored more than 15 points in a game since an opening-week loss to Mt. Juliet. No. 10 Riverdale outscored region opponents Rockvale and Coffee County by a combined 90-6. Senior QB Braden Graham has passed for 1,500 yards with 17 touchdowns.

Joyce's pick: Riverdale 38, Cane Ridge 13.

Stewarts Creek (4-2) at West Creek (2-4)

When: 7 p.m., Thursday

The Red Hawks suffered a district loss to Antioch last week, despite 170 total yards and three TDs by Kenny Jordan and 110 yards rushing and a TD by Javarian Otey. West Creek defeated Northwest 34-8 last week behind 164 yards rushing and a TD by Jaisaun Ousley.

Joyce's pick: Stewarts Creek 34, West Creek 7.

Rockvale (2-4, 0-2 3-6A) at Coffee Co. (1-5, 0-2)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

The Rockets are trying to break a two-game region skid and get their offense going after scoring just six points in their past two games. Kam Frierson had eight tackles (2.5 for loss) in a 35-0 loss to Oakland last week. Coffee County has been shut out in four of its past five games.

Joyce's pick: Rockvale 27, Coffee Co. 0.

East Nashville (5-1) at Smyrna (2-4)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

The Bulldogs have back-to-back shutouts and scored two defensive TDs in a 34-0 win over McGavock last week. Senior Thomas Jones also scored two TDs in the win. East Nashville, ranked No. 3 in 3A, suffered its first loss, 42-21, at FRA last week. Eagles QB Martez Lamb threw for 311 yards and a TD in the loss.

Joyce's pick: East Nashville 27, Smyrna 16.

PURE Academy (0-6) at Blackman (2-4)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

The Blaze have won two in a row, including a 24-21 victory over Siegel last week in which Carter Gregory passed for 160 yards and three TDs and Caden Perkins rushed for 128 yards. PURE Academy is allowing 30 points a game during its winless streak, but came within a TD in their past two, including a 21-14 loss to Hardin County last week.

Joyce's pick: Blackman 40, PURE Academy 13.

MTCS (6-0) at South Pittsburg (6-0)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

The Pirates are ranked No. 1 in Class 1A. Kamden Wellington threw for three TDs and Ky Powell rushed for two TDs in a 62-0 win over North Jackson (Alabama) last week. South Pittsburg is averaging 53 points per game and has four shutouts. Eli Wilson has 982 yards rushing and 16 TDs for the Cougars.

Joyce's pick: South Pittsburg 41, MTCS 14.

La Vergne (1-5, 0-2 5-6A) at McGavock (1-5, 0-2)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

La Vergne is trying to snap a five-game losing skid and earn its first region victory, and the Wolverines will face a McGavock team that was shut out last week against Smyrna. La Vergne's D'Andre Sims had 12 tackles, three sacks and an interception in a 3-0 loss to Cane Ridge last week.

Joyce's pick: La Vergne 16, McGavock 6.

Eagleville (3-3) at Tennessee Heat (4-3)

When: 7 p,m., Friday

The Heat have played just two TSSAA opponent this season, falling 48-12 to DCA and 37-8 to Grundy County. Running back Wyatt Sutton is averaging more than eight yards per carry. Eagleville is coming off a 30-22 loss to Wayne County in which QB Will Becker passed for 192 yards and two TDs and rushed for 32 yards.

Joyce's pick: Eagleville 38, Tennessee Heat 13.

Friendship Christian (5-1, 0-1 DII-A East) at PCA (3-3, 1-0)

When: 7 p.m., Friday at MTSU

The Lions, playing in their first year of TSSAA 11-man football, is riding a two-game winning streak, including a 20-15 win over region foe The King's Academy last week. The third-ranked Commanders suffered their first loss, 16-14, to MTCS last week, despite 153 yards rushing and a TD from Tyson Wolcott.

Joyce's pick: Friendship Christian 35, PCA 12.

Cannon Co. (2-4) at Cornersville (3-3)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

The Lions' offense dominated in a 67-28 win over Community last week as Brayden Smithson rushed for 102 yards and four TDs and QB Kolby Miller passed for two TDs and rushed for one. Cornersville is led by 6-foot-4, 240-pound RB/DE Ben Franklin, who has more than 1,000 yards rushing.

Joyce's pick: Cornersville 34, Cannon Co. 20.

Last week: 7-3. Season: 44-15.
