Oakland Raiders Week Three: By the Numbers

Surging back to respectability and a sexy pick for Super Bowl contender, what did the Oakland Raiders do on Sunday night?

A primetime face plant.

Unable to get any semblance of offense going, the Raiders were systematically dissected by the Washington Redskins in a 27-10 defeat.

“You never want anything like this to happen, obviously,” quarterback Derek Carr said after the loss. “But you get punched in the mouth and you really get to find out what you’re about. I’ve been through too much in my life to let this game bring me down or change what I do. And so it’s definitely not going to change our team but it’s a reminder that any time, any day, anyone can get after your tail if you don’t come in and show up.”

This week’s numbers surely did not show up in the Raiders’ favor:

  • 0 — Amount of times Oakland converted third down. The Raiders finished an abysmal 0-for-11 on third down.

  • 1 — Khalil Mack sack. Several other defenders came close to dropping Washington QB Kirk Cousins, but Mack has the lone takedown.

  • 2.7 — Average yards the Raiders mustered per play.

  • 4 — Times the Redskins got to Carr. Also represents number of penalties on Oakland (35 yards).

  • 5 — Catches wide receiver Amari Cooper has hauled in during last two games. Cooper had 5 in season opener.

  • 6 — Receptions by Washington’s Chris Thompson for a staggering 150 yards and a score.

  • 7.3 — Average yards the Redskins gained per play.

  • 10 — Penalties on Washington (77 yards).

  • 12 — Total tackles by Raiders linebacker Cory James. He also impressively forced a fumble.

  • 18 — Yards Raiders corner Sean Smith was burned as Vernon Davis got past him for a scoring grab.

  • 19 — Number of Carr completions. He finished 19 of 31 with a TD and 2 interceptions.

  • 22 — Yards Thompson galloped when he was left wide open for the TD.

  • 25 — Number of Cousins completions. He finished 25 of 30 for 365 yards and 3 TDs.

  • 33 — Washington’s red zone percentage. In comparison, Oakland was 50 percent (1 of 2).

  • 74 — Yards Thompson smoked the Raiders defense for the score on a 3rd-and-19 screen pass.

  • 82 — Number of throws in between Carr’s interceptions (dating back to last season).

  • 128 — Total net yards of offense by the Raiders.

  • 472 — Total net yards of offense by the Redskins.

With a trip to Denver with an AFC West tilt with the Broncos on tap, just how will Oakland’s numbers look in Week 4? It’s difficult to say.
