Oakland basketball vs. NC State score, highlights from 2024 March Madness: OU falls 79-73 in OT

It's time to see if Oakland can continue the March Madness run for another week.

The 14-seeded Golden Grizzlies (24-11) are in the second round of the 2024 NCAA tournament for the first time in school history after upsetting Kentucky in the first round on Thursday. Oakland was the biggest underdog in the first round to advance, becoming one of the darlings of the tournament on the first night. The next stop on the run is against 11-seed NC State (23-14), who made the field by winning the ACC tournament, then handily beat Texas Tech in the first round.

More: Oakland basketball and Jack Gohlke are so much more than a March Madness Cinderella

The Golden Grizzlies are confident heading into the matchup, but it will be a tough one against the Wolfpack, who won five games in five days in the ACC tournament to secure an automatic bid. NC State is led by a pair of DJs, point guard DJ Horne and center DJ Burns Jr., and are currently riding a six-game winning streak that included three NCAA tournament teams in North Carolina, Duke and Texas Tech.

Oakland vs NC State live score updates in NCAA second round

Oakland falls to NC State, 79-73

Oakland fought until the very end, but NC State proved superior in overtime. DQ Cole hit a final 3 for OU to cut it to six and the Golden Grizzlies forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass, but missed the final shot to end their March hopes. Oakland will go down as one of the best stories of the 2024 NCAA tournament for slaying Kentucky then taking the ACC champions to the wire in a 45 minute fight. Trey Townsend finished with a 30-point, 13-rebound double-double while Jack Gohlke had 22 points on 6-of-17 shooting from deep.

Oakland trails 79-70 with 17 seconds left

The clock is striking midnight on Oakland. Jayden Taylor hit a massive 3 for NC State on a feed from DJ Burns in the post, then Gohlke missed a 3, leading to a pair of free throws for DJ Horne to make it a seven-point deficit. Gohlke fired again trying to find an answer but missed, ending Oakland's hopes at another step on a magical run.

Trey Townsend hits 30, Oakland trails by 2 with 1:33 left

Oakland took a 69-68 lead on a pair of free throws from Townsend, who hit 30 points, but DJ Burns answered with a layup to put NC State up one with two minutes left. Townsend turned it over on the other end on the next trip, leading to a DJ Horne long 2-point jumper. Blake Lampman was fouled on the rebound, and split a pair at the line. NC State leads 72-70 with 1:33 left.

9:17 p.m.: Oakland scored the first point of overtime over a minute in on a split pair of free throws from Trey Townsend, who is up to 28 points. Oakland leads 67-66 with 3:30 left.

Oakland, NC State heading to overtime

Both teams got a look, but the offenses came up empty to carry the deadlock into overtime. Oakland got a stop defensively, forcing a missed jumper from DJ Burns, and called a timeout with 12 seconds left for the final shot. Oakland tried to draw a play for Trey Townsend on the left elbow, but it took too long to develop and Chris Conway ended up missing on the entry pass and the ball went out of bounds. The ball was tipped and it was reviewed, but it was ultimately Wolfpack ball. NC State had a chance with a half-court shot with a second left, but Casey Morsell's heave was just off.

Oakland, NC State tied at 66 with 36 seconds left

NC State took the lead on an old fashioned 3-point play by Michael O'Connell to go up 66-64 with a minute left. Jack Gohlke got fouled off the ball on the other end and hit both free throws to tie the game at 66. A buzzer beater or OT might be on the menu tonight.

9:01 p.m.: Oakland leads 64-63 with 1:17 left with NC State currently in possession of the ball. Jack Gohlke split a pair of free throws while NC State went 2-of-4 in two trips to the line. Turn to TBS now if you can.

Oakland takes 63-61 lead with 2:49 left on Trey Townsend and-one

It took 37 minutes, but Oakland has their first lead of the night. After Gohlke hit his sixth 3 to cut it to a 61-60 game, Oakland got a stop on the other end then immediately fed their hottest hand, Trey Townsend, on the right block. Townsend spun towards the baseline and finished the layup through contact, earning the and-one, and hit the free throw. Townsend has 27 points and Gohlke has 19.

Oakland trails NC State 59-57 with 3:59 left

Oakland is going down to the wire again, answering everything NC State throws at them on the other end. After a Michael O'Connell 3 for NCSU, Trey Townsend buried his second trey of the second half to keep the deficit at two.

8:44 p.m.: Now, it's a four-point play for Jack Gohlke, who converted an and-one on a moving 3 from the left corner. Gohlke hit the free throw to make it 56-54, NCSU with six minutes left. Gohlke has 16 points on five 3s. NC State called a timeout leading 56-54 with 5:19 left.

Trey Townsend up to 21 points, Oakland trailing by 3 with 7:35 left

Townsend is up to a game-high 21 with 10 rebounds for consecutive tournament games with a double-double, including 15 points in the second half on 6-of-10 shooting. He answered NC State's brief run with a 3 of his own followed by a midrange jumper to answer another silky smooth post bucket from DJ Burns Jr.

Oakland trails by 6 with 10 minutes left

NC State leads 51-45. Chris Conway tied it at 45 with a 3 for Oakland, but NCSU answered with a pair of triples from Casey Morsell and Michael O'Connell to rebuild the lead.

8:33 p.m.: Oakland trails NC State 45-42 with 11:59 left. DJ Burns finished an and-one on a move under the rim to give the Wolfpack the lead again. Oakland is 5-of-14 from the field so far this second half, with one 3 from Gohlke, while NC State is 5-of-15 from the field, including a four-minute scoring drought where Oakland ripped off an 8-1 run.

8:29 p.m.: Jack Gohlke strikes again, this time on the move from the left wing, to cut Oakland's deficit to 42-40 with 14 minutes left. A minute later, Trey Townsend got a pass wide open underneath the rim for an easy layup to tie it at 42 after a breakdown on a loose ball.

8:21 p.m.: Trey Townsend is going to work for Oakland early in the second half. The Horizon League player of the year has the first seven points of the second half for OU, including a trip to the line after the timeout to complete an old-fashioned 3 after getting fouled on a layup. But, NC State has hit three shots at the rim and Casey Morsell drained a 3 to put NCSCU up 41-36 with 15:50 left.

NC State leads Oakland 32-29 at halftime

Oakland couldn't hold a halftime lead for the second straight tournament game, but the Golden Grizzlies are hanging in there. Oakland finished the half with a pullup midrange jumper from Rocket Watts to trail by three at half. Oakland finished the half missing nine of their final 12 shots, but held NC State to six points in the final six minutes to hang around. Oakland is shooting 38.7% from the field (12-31) and 33% from 3 (5-15), while NC State is shooting 41.2% (14-34) but just 27.3% (3-11) from deep. NC State holds a 25-14 rebounding edge with eight more points in the paint (20 to 12).

7:51 p.m.: NC State leads Oakland 32-27 with 9.4 seconds left in the first half. Oakland cut it to 1 on a Townsend layup and multiple chances to take the lead, but came up empty on multiple offensive possessions in a row, while NC State added two layups. Oakland will have one final play before half to try to make it a one-possession game.

7:44 p.m.: Oakland is holding their own and keeping it close. The Golden Grizzlies trail NC State 28-25 at the final media timeout of the first half with 3:15 on the clock. NC State came out of the last timeout with a layup, but Jack Gohlke drained another deep shot to cut it to one possession. Gohlke is up to 9 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep.

NC State leads Oakland 26-22 late 1st half

7:36 p.m.: NC State is pressing all of the right buttons against Oakland's defense, building a 26-17 lead with 8 minutes left. But Oakland responded with a Chris Conway jumper and Jack Gohlke 3 to trim the deficit to 26-22 at the 6:17 mark. The Golden Grizzlies are sticking around.

7:28 p.m.: N.C. State is giving Oakland fits on both ends of the court, building a 22-15 lead with 9:29 left in the first half. The Wolfpack hit two layups then two threes and a fadeaway from Burns., matched by two threes from Blake Lampman and a layup from Trey Townsend. 7:19 p.m.: NC State leads Oakland 9-7 with 13:59 left in the first half at the first media timeout. NC State jumped out to a 7-2 lead thanks to three quick buckets from DJ Horne, but Oakland cut it to two on a Chris Conway putback dunk and a 3 from Jack Gohlke — who else? — on his first attempt of the game.

7:12 p.m.: NC State got the first bucket of the game on a transition layup to go up 2-0. Oakland's starting lineup is Trey Townsend, Blake Lampman, Chris Conway, DQ Cole and Isaiah Jones. NC State's starting lineup is DJ Horne, DJ Burns Jr, Mohamed Diarra, Michael O'Connell and Casey Morsell.

Oakland vs NC State preview

Oakland: The tournament run may be new for Oakland, but the team boasts a wealth of experience, starting with the two stars of the first round, Jack Gohlke and Trey Townsend. Those two combined for 49 points in the win over Kentucky, and others like DQ Cole and Rockett Watts delivered clutch plays late to secure the win. The Horizon League champions will likely employ a similar strategy of letting it fly from deep against the Wolfpack.

TEAM B: NC State was destined to miss the tournament, but a magical run in the conference tournament with five wins in five days makes the Wolfpack one of the hottest teams left in the field. In addition to Horne and Burns, NC State gets major contributions from Mohamed Diarra inside and Jayden Taylor and Casey Morsell on the wing.
