Oak Park High girls soccer, basketball teams reach CIF-SS championship games

Fly, Eagles fly. That's for sure.

Two Oak Park High girls teams are headed to CIF-Southern Section championship games after wins on Saturday.

Malea Johnson’s 94th-minute golden goal lifted the Oak Park girls soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over University in a Division 3 semifinal game at Oak Park High. The Eagles reached their first sectional final in 21 years.

The strike into the upper-left corner completed a comeback that Oak Park faced since falling behind in the fifth minute.

“I think the nerves got the best of us from the start,” Oak Park coach Kathryn Klamecki said. “But once we got in the flow of the game, we got comfortable. … They wanted it.”

Oak Park, which last reached a sectional final in 2003, will host Apple Valley for the Division 3 championship Friday night.

After falling behind early, Oak Park made attacking adjustments.

“I just created a more offensive formation,” Klamecki said.

They paid off in the 26th minute, when the Eagles pulled even on Emily Rychlik’s goal, which was assisted by Ava Dermott.

The top-seeded Oak Park girls basketball team advanced to a CIF-SS championship game for the second straight season with a 64-51 win over host Torrance in a Division 3AA semifinal game.
