Oak Hills’ Edgar Esparza is the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week
There were 55,589 votes cast this week in the race for the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week poll winner.
It came down to the wire, and Oak Hills’ Edgar Esparza ended with 34.92% of total votes casted by Daily Press readers.
The goalkeeper received 19,414 votes, beating out 10 other high school athletes from across the High Desert. Entering the final day of voting, Edgar and two other local athletes each garnered more than 7,500 votes.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Edgar came up big for the Bulldogs down the stretch of the regular season. The goalkeeper tallied three saves in a 1-0 victory over Serrano on Jan. 29. Edgar made five crucial saves in a 3-0 victory over Hesperia on Jan. 31.
In the voting, Edgar beat out Hesperia’s Jasiah Williams, who finished with 28.76% at 15,987 total votes.
Jasiah began the final week of the season by scoring 10 points with two rebounds in a 111-23 victory over Sultana on Jan. 31. In the regular season finale, the freshman led the way for Hesperia in the Mojave River League title game against Oak Hills on Feb. 2. Jasiah led the team with 16 points as he drained four 3-pointers.

Acxel Jimenez, a soccer player from Granite Hills, finished in third place with 14.95% at 8,311 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between Jan. 26 to Feb. 3.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
