Oak Hill garners middle school titles

Feb. 19—OAK HILL — Oak Hill walked away with both top trophies at the 2024 Fayette County Middle School Basketball Tournament.

On Friday, Feb. 16 at Oak Hill Middle School, the Red Devil girls closed strong in the final nine minutes to post a 26-18 victory over Midland Trail to claim bragging rights. On the boys side, their classmates also emerged victorious, defeating Valley 30-18 in the title contest. Below is a review of the action, including Thursday's consolation games:

Girls championship

Oak Hill 26, Midland Trail 18

The game was knotted at 4-4 in the early going, then the Red Devils pushed out to a 10-4 lead before the Patriots scored five straight to creep back within one point, 10-9, through six minutes.

The teams were tied at 14-14 at halftime, then Midland Trail started strong in the third to own an 18-14 lead midway through the period.

The bottom fell out for the Patriots after that, though, as Oak Hill went on a 6-0 run to get back in front, 20-18, heading into the final frame. The Red Devils closed it out with a 6-0 spread in the last period.

Makynlee Lewis scored seven points to lead a balanced OHMS offense. Bella Holly and Serenity Bourgord added six each.

Presley Walker scored nine and Abigail Parcell five to lead Midland Trail.

Boys championship

Oak Hill 30, Valley 18

Oak Hill built up a 9-2 lead after one quarter, but Valley got back in it with an 8-3 advantage in the second for a 12-10 OHMS lead at the intermission.

The game remained tight through the third period, but the Devils finished out strong with a 14-3 spread in the final quarter to secure the victory.

Keelan Remy's 10-point effort guided Oak Hill. Taron Thomas chipped in eight.

For the Greyhounds, Von Brockman netted a team-best 10 points.

Valley

Girls consolation

Fayetteville 27, Valley 26 (OT)

The Fayetteville Pirates posted a thrilling 27-26 overtime verdict over Valley to claim third place.

Kinslee Hildebrand and Lilly Hrabosky scored seven points each to pace Fayetteville, while teammate Kinzlee Dove chipped in six.

Sakiah Hutchinson tallied eight and Hayleigh Newman seven for the Greyhounds.

Jacob Brown scored 15 points and Rayce Dickerson tossed in 12 to highlight the Patriots' third-place win.

Raylen Stonestreet netted eight and Parker Rhodes six for the Pirates.
