NYSPHSAA cross country championships: Fayetteville-Manlius, South Lewis runners win titles

VERONA - Two Section III runners won individual titles Saturday at the NYSPHSAA's cross country championship meet on the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill course that had hosted the sectional meet one week earlier.

Fayetteville-Manlius senior Nolan McGinn ran the fastest five-kilometer time of the day while winning the Class A boys race, and South Lewis senior Brynn Bernard won her third championship in the Class D girls race.Bernard, Mallory Kraeger and their Falcons teammates won Section III's lone team title. Kraeger joined Bernard among the top 10 individual finishers, running ninth among 111 competitors.

Bernard ran the course in 18:56.0, 12 seconds faster than her closest challenger, eighth-grader Anna Furman from Section IX Tri-Valley. Bernard had won the state race on the same course in 19:20.4 last year and finished 1-2 with her older sister Lexi at Chenango Forks in 2021.

South Lewis Falcon Brynn Bernard (371) won the Class D race at the 2022 state championship meet and repeated Saturday on the same course at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

The Bernard sisters had finished second and fourth in Kings Park in 2018 and swapped spots with eighth-grader Brynn second in Plattsburgh in 2019.

McGinn, who ran the Section III race 15:39.8 and repeated as champion last week, posted a time of 15:48.7 Saturday and was seven seconds faster than Class A runner-up Douglas Antaky, the second fastest finisher of the day. No runner had broken 16 minutes on the course at last fall's meet when McGinn placed sixth in Class A and ran seventh fastest overall in 16:16.2.

Saratoga Springs swept the Class A team titles with the Section II school's boys beating Section IX Monroe-Woodbury in a tie-breaker; both teams scored 58 points but Saratoga Springs' sixth runner placed 23rd in the scoring ahead of not only Monroe-Woodbury's sixth but also its fifth which was 35th. The Saratoga Springs girls placed their top five runners among the top 11 in the team scoring and finished with 24 points to runner-up Northport's 80; Fayetteville-Manlius was third with 101. Section III Auburn was the boys' third place team.

Section VI East Aurora also swept team titles in Class C with Section III Adirondack's girls finishing second, two points ahead of Section I Bronxville. Adirondack Wildcat Cora Hinsdill, the Section III individual champion, ran 19th among 131 runners in 20:14.5 but was the eighth runner in the team scoring with teammates Kaylee Mathis and Johannah Northrop 13th and 14th, Eliana Pitts 18th and Nicole Steria 24th. Section III Mexico Academy was fifth and Section II Fonda-Fultonville seventh among the boys' teams.

South Lewis narrowly missed a Class D team sweep with the boys finishing second behind Section IX Pine Plains.In Class B, team honors went to Section II's Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake's boys and the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls were third behind Section XI Sayville. Whitesboro's boys ran ninth as the Section III champions, and the Chittenango girls were ninth.

Molly Myatt, an eighth-grader from Oneida, was the area's fastest female, running eighth in the Class C race with a time of 19:34.3, good for 51st overall among 464 runners. Bernard was the top Section III runner with the 15th-fastest time, and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill sophomore Kasadee Leonardo ran 14th in Class C on her home course with the No. 86 time of the day, 19:59.0. There were 89 girls under 20 minutes.

Among the notable finishes for area girls were Catherine Manna of Whitesboro who finished 50th in Class B, two spots ahead of New Hartford Spartan Alexandria French with New Hartford's Abigail Neale 63rd and Grace Lally of Central Valley Academy 99th. Myatt, Leonardo and the Adirondack runners were joined in Class C by Isabella Miller from Section II Fonda-Fultonville who ran 39th. Dolgeville Blue Devil Grace Seeley ran 24th in Class D, two spots higher and 45 seconds faster than last year.

Collin Stafford of South Lewis posted the 18th-fastest time among the 469 boys while Joe Berry of Hamilton ran 14th among the Class D boys with a time of 16:54.9, good for No. 83 overall. Waterville teammates Danny Casatelli and Logan Baker were nos. 17 and 27 in Class D and 107 and 157 overall.

Other notable finishes for area boys included Sauquoit Valley Red Hawk Alex Keller who ran 33rd among the Class D boys; he placed 27th last year with time that was 16 seconds slower when the then-Indians finished fourth as a team. Tyson Fuller of Oneida ran 38th in the Class C race, and Matheu Dettenreider and Ty Sanges were 46th and 49th for Fonda-Fultonvile, the seventh-place team. In Class B, Seth Stevens (61st) and Joseph Labarbera (70th) were the top finishers for Whitesboro with New Hartford's Anthony Falvo running 79th and Central Valley Academy's Anthony Joyce 90th.

The state's federation meet will be run Saturday in Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
