Novak Djokovic 'fine' after being hit in the head by water bottle at Italian Open

Novak Djokovic has assured fans he is “fine” after being hit on the head by a water bottle as he signed autographs at the Italian Open.

The incident occurred after the world No1’s 6-3 6-1 second-round victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet on Friday.

"A boy was calling out to get an autograph and the bottle fell out of his bag,” tournament organisers confirmed.

"This is not being treated as a deliberate act, but as an accident.”

Djokovic went down to the ground holding his head in pain in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

The Italian Open issued a statement saying: “He has undergone the necessary checks and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel. His condition is not a cause for concern."

Djokovic later confirmed that he was not injured.

Writing on X, he said: “Thank you for the messages of concern. This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday”

The 24-time Grand Slam champion beat Moutet in straight sets, despite a slow start that saw him broken in his first two service games. Djokovic responded to win the first set 6-4 from 3-1 down.

The match was bizarrely interrupted after Moutet’s phone alarm went off.

Djokovic will face Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the third round on Sunday, as he looks to win his seventh Italian Open title.
