Notable quotes from Dan Lanning in final presser before Arizona State trip

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning knows that this weekend’s trip to the desert will be one with noise off of the field. Whether it’s a meeting with good friend and former Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, or a return home for several players on the team, and for Lanning himself. there are several storylines that can be called upon ahead of this matchup.

That’s not keeping the main thing from the main thing for the Ducks, though, who are two wins away from making it to the Pac-12 Championship game and a potential rematch with the Washington Huskies.

That’s the focs for Lanning and his squad right now, and it starts with the 60 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Lanning met with media members for the final time on Wednesday afternoon to preview that matchup. Here are some of the most notable quotes from that presser:

Andrew Boyle

Question: Is there any timeline for seeing Andrew Boyle this year?

Lanning: “Probably not going to see Andrew this year. You don’t put timelines on that you put benchmarks and if guys hit their benchmarks you’re able to get them back.”

Loyalty

Question: When talking about the Texas A&M job, you mentioned loyalty as one of the main reasons for staying at Oregon. What does loyalty mean to you?

Lanning: “I mean, you are what you do consistently, right? And I’ve been fortunate enough to be around some phenomenal people. And yeah, loyalty means something to me. It’ll always mean something to me.”

Ball Security

Question: How important has Bo’s ball security been for you guys this year?

Lanning: “Huge, right? You talk about success, we talked about the two biggest indicators of wins and losses and it’s explosive plays and taking care of the ball or taking the ball. Those are big indicators. When we take care of the ball we’re a pretty dangerous team.”

2024 Class

Question: How would you assess your 2024 recruiting class thus far?

Lanning: “I think we have a great class coming in, and I’m really excited about some of the guys that are gonna come here and be a part of what we’re doing. I think they see you know, the big picture, what exists here. I think they see the consistency. They want to be a part of a great team, you know, great, great players want to play with other great players, right? And that’s what we have built so far.”

Jaden Rashada

Question: What have you seen from Jaden Rashada so far this year?

Lanning: “We anticipate seeing Jaden out there on the field. He’s a talented player, you know, obviously, he can throw a good ball.”

Dillingham

Question: What have you seen on tape from Dillingham’s team that impresses you so far?

Lanning: “Well, just great effort on film. They consistently have great effort on film. I think they play disciplined football, they’re not a team that really hurts themselves. And that, you know, they have wrinkles each week that make them, you know, tough to defend.”

Complicated Preparation

Question: How to the wrinkles in ASU’s offense make them difficult to prepare for?

Lanning: “Yeah, I think we consistently try to give our guys a lot of looks. You know, one of the things that make, what we do difficult is how much we ask our guys to do and they’ve been able to handle that really well. We don’t know exactly what they’re going to do. But we do know their DNA plays. We do know what they you know what they make their hay in. That’s what you have to really work and then try to throw some wrinkles at your practice that he hasn’t put on film and that way they can adjust accordingly.”

Player Buy-In

Question: What type of buy-in is required for players on the defensive line who may not be playing as many reps in order to rotate everyone more, not getting as much attention?

Lanning: “I disagree. You’re talking about them right now, right? People are talking about what these guys are doing. It’s not really about production. It’s never really about production. You got to look at the first round of the draft, you’re gonna see seven edge guys drafted, and tell me, how many of those guys actually have double-digit sacks? I think there was one last year in Will Anderson. It’s not about production, it’s about execution. It’s about the film you put on tape. Our guys realize that.”

Cameron Skattebo

Question: What type of challenge does Cameron Skattebo present?

Lanning: “No. I mean, every time this guy touches a field, it’s like punt, pass and kick competition. I mean, he can do it all so you don’t know what you’re gonna get from him. He’s tough. He’s hard-nosed. He doesn’t go down on first contact. He threw the ball on third and 10 last week, right? So it’s just really unique how they use him. You almost have to treat him as a quarterback that can run at times when he’s back there.”
