Northern takes second at Berkeley Springs' Max Horz wrestling tournament

Dec. 27—BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Northern Garrett finished second to host Berkeley Springs in the 39th Max Horz Holiday Invitational wrestling tournament held Thursday and Friday at Berkeley Springs High School.

Frankfort's Wes Files was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler for the 106-144 weight divisions, Bridgeport's John Knight was the MOW for the 150-285 group and Hampshire's Kaylie Hall was the Most Outstanding Female Wrestler.

Quickest pin honors for the boys went to Northern's Nick Riley in four seconds and Hampshire's Hall and Buckhannon-Upshur's Bri Howes both had 11-second pins for the girls.

Area individual champions were Fort Hill's Carter Hess, Northern's Caleb Brenneman, Devon Opel, Mason Glotfelty and Mathew Beitzel, Frankfort's Files and in girls Allegany's Brandi Gochenauer, Fort Hill's Amy Tressler and Hampshire's Hall.

The Indians won with 259.5 points, 38 ahead of Northern's 221.5.

Martinsburg finished third (183), Preston fourth (175.5), Wheeling Central fifth (154.5), Cameron sixth (141.5), Hedgesville seventh (139), Bridgeport eighth (137.5) and ninth was North Marion (131.5).

Fort Hill led other area schools with its 10th-place finish with 124 points. East Hardy was 11th (117), Petersburg 12th (88), Frankfort 13th (61) and Allegany 14th (58). Hampshire was 16th (43) behind Jefferson (47) and Mountain Ridge was 18th (31.5) behind Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, (38.5).

In the 285-weight class, Fort Hill's Hess won by defeating Martinsburg's Travis Cofield by pin in 33 seconds. East Hardy's Sean O'Callagan pinned Berkeley Springs' Remington Sites in 5:21 to take third.

At 215, East Hardy's Garrett Van Meter decisioned Fort Hill's Wyatt Walker 3-0 for third place. Wheeling Central's Isaac Martin took first and Berkeley Springs' Brady Wilt was second.

Northern's Riley was pinned by Preston's undefeated Owen Klimas in 1:55 in the 190 championship match. Klimas' record is 29-0.

Fort Hill's Jaylan Atkinson finished fourth in the 175-pound division, East Hardy's Tyler Tarallo was sixth at 165 and Petersburg's Alex Halterman pinned Preston's Sam Klimas in 1:37 to take fifth place at 157.

At 150, Northern's Brenneman improved to 16-0 with a 49-second pin of Bridgeport's Alex Naternicola. Petersburg's Zeke Landis placed fourth and East Hardy's Brandon Jones was sixth.

In the 144 division, Petersburg's Lukas Wolford was decisioned by Berkeley Springs' Will Gageby, 4-0, to finish second. Northern's Lucas Wolf finished fourth by suffering a 1-0 decision to Marshall Crow of Wheeling Central.

Northern's Opel pinned Cameron's Delbert Vantassell in 36 seconds to win the 132-pound division. The Huskies' Luke Kostovic was sixth in the 138 weight class.

Glotfelty, undefeated at 16-0 for Northern, decisioned East Hardy's Milton Funkhouser 15-2 to win the 120-weight division. Frankfort's Gavin Corwell was fifth with a pin in 5:23 over Hedgesville's Ryan Mongold.

In the 113 championship match, Northern's Beitzel pinned Hampshire's Justice Steinmetz in 58 seconds. Allegany's Noah Filer decisioned Bridgeport's Noah Davisson 8-2 for fifth place.

Frankfort's Files pinned Cameron's Brody Smith in 1:32 to win the 106-pound division. Petersburg's Josh Lahman finished sixth.

In the girls' matches, Allegany's Gochenauer took first in the 185-235 division. East Hardy's Nahkita Bauserman was second and Chelsea Mills was fifth.

In the 145-165 group, Hampshire's Hall was first, Allegany's Alanna Adams second and Maddie Sponaugle of Frankfort took fourth. Mountain Ridge's Jaianna Wickline was fifth in the 138 division and at 132, East Hardy's Morganne Miller finished second.

Northern's Ady Taylor came in second in 126. East Hardy's Gracie Heishman was third, Allegany's Madison Mongold fourth and Fort Hill's Chloe Williams fifth.

At 120, Brianna Lavalle of Fort Hill finished fifth and East Hardy's Brianna Walker was sixth. East Hardy's Madilyn Funk was fourth in the 114 division and Fort Hill's Serenity Meihls came in sixth.

Fort Hill's Amy Tressler took first in the 100-107 group ahead of Northern's Laura Moats.
