North Marion, East Fairmont top girls basketball preseason rankings

Nov. 29—FAIRMONT — The 2023-24 season for West Virginia high school girls basketball starts this weekend, and teams are already ranked by coaches.

The West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association announced in a release Monday it will run a poll for girls basketball this season. The preseason rankings came with the release.

Marion County schools take the top two spots in Class AAA. North Marion takes the No. 1 ranking and received eight first place votes. East Fairmont follows in second place without any first place votes.

Following North Marion and East Fairmont are Wayne, with four first place votes, Philip Barbour, Lewis County, Robert C. Byrd, Hampshire, Weir, Keyser and Lincoln. Fairmont Senior did not reach the Top 10 in voting.

North Marion enters the 2023-24 season as the reigning state champions in AAA. After losing the first game of the season, the Huskies rallied to win every game that followed and claimed another state title for its historic program.

East Fairmont made the state tournament last year for the first time since 2007. The bees had 23 wins, the most in school history, before falling to Philip Barbour in the quarterfinal in Charleston.

In the other classes, Morgantown takes the No. 1 sport in AAAA with nine first place votes, Wyoming East tops AA with seven first place votes and Cameron is first in A with 10 first place votes.

The WVSACA said in the release it will publish new polls every two weeks after the initial preseason rankings and pull team records from the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission website. A final poll will be released the Monday after the Girls' State Tournament.
