North Kitsap football still has no equal in the Olympic League after Bremerton blowout

The first-place high school football showdown in the Olympic League turned out to be beatdown instead.

It shouldn't be a surprise, really. North Kitsap has been the Class 2A league's dominant program for the better part of a decade and the Vikings showed it Friday by rolling over Bremerton 41-14 in Poulsbo.

Junior running back Carter Dungy led North Kitsap (6-1 overall, 5-0 in league) with 219 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Logan Sloman added a receiving touchdown, a rushing touchdown and three interceptions on defense. Defensively, the Vikings held Bremerton (6-1, 5-1) to under 100 yards of total offense during the game, which went to a running clock midway through the third quarter after North Kitsap went ahead 41-0.

"It was a really big game for us," Dungy said. "We were ready for them."

With two games left in the regular season, North Kitsap is in line to capture its fourth consecutive Olympic League title. The Vikings haven't lost a game to a league opponent since falling at Sequim during the 2018 season.

"I thought the kids had a great week of practice," said North Kitsap head coach Jeff Weible, whose team travels to Sequim in Week 8. "When we practice well, we usually play well."

North Kitsap certainly plays well against Bremerton. The Vikings' victory Friday was their 11th consecutive win against the Knights, who trailed 28-0 at halftime and only mustered 17 yards of total offense through the first two quarters. Oliver Christian and Lars Michaelson scored touchdowns for Bremerton late in the fourth quarter once North Kitsap began to pull its starters.

"We could have scored seven points tonight and won 7-0 if we wanted to," Weible said. "We just really shut down their run and their pass game."

North Kitsap already led 14-0 when Dungy scored on a bruising 47-yard run late in the second quarter. The Vikings then recovered an onsides kick, leading to a 1-yard touchdown by Dungy with 14 seconds to go before halftime.

North Kitsap's first drive of the third quarter was a definite statement: eight plays, 65 yards, all carries by Dungy, concluding with a 4-yard touchdown run. The Knights simply had no answers on this night.

"They just told me to keep pounding them, keep pounding them," Dungy said, "they are going to give up eventually."

Sloman, who picked off passes on three consecutive Bremerton drives in the second quarter, finished off the scoring for the Vikings with a 48-yard scoring run. It was Sloman's 51-yard touchdown reception that put North Kitsap up 7-0 less than four minutes into the game.

Olympic erupts for 62 points against Kingston

Olympic continued to keep its district playoff hopes alive with a 62-7 home victory over Kingston.

The Trojans (4-3 overall, 2-3 in Olympic League 2A) had no trouble putting points on the board as Ryan Macazo (3), Riley McCoy (1) and Antonio Castorena scored rushing touchdowns, Devin Slater had a receiving touchdowns, while Jeremiah Swain (interception return), Donovan Weaver (interception return) and KJ Hudson (fumble recovery) added touchdowns on defense.

Olympic is tied for fourth place in the league standings with Sequim, but own the head-to-head tiebreaker, meaning the Trojans are still alive for an at-large postseason berth with two weeks left in the regular season. Olympic faces North Mason in Week 8.

"There is still a path to the playoffs," Trojans head coach Sal Quitevis Jr. said.

In other Olympic League action, Bainbridge's postseason hopes took a hit after the Spartans fell 48-14 on the road against Port Angeles. Bainbridge (5-2, 3-2) trailed 27-7 at halftime and continued to struggle against the Roughriders (4-3, 3-2) in the second half.

"We could just not get anything going on offense or defense," said Bainbridge head coach Dan Schoonmaker, whose team needs to finish in the top three in the league standings to have a shot of earning a Class 3A district playoff berth. Bainbridge and Port Angeles are now tied for third place heading into Week 8, but the Roughriders own the head-to-head tiebreaker.

North Mason's struggles continued with a 36-0 road loss at Sequim. The Bulldogs (1-6, 1-4) were shut out for the fourth consecutive game. Sequim improved to 2-4, 2-3.

Central Kitsap picks up first league win

Central Kitsap snapped a five-game losing streak by knocking off River Ridge 20-10 to pick up its first South Sound Conference 3A win. The Cougars (2-5, 1-4) led 17-0 at halftime and 20-3 through three quarters. Uriah Stringfield and Timothy Sousou scored touchdowns and Josh Voce connected on a pair of field goals for CK, which travels to Gig Harbor in Week 8.

On Thursday in the South Puget Sound League 4A, South Kitsap fell 35-7 on the road against top-ranked Graham-Kapowsin. Brycen Clay scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for the Wolves, who trailed 21-7 at halftime. Clay ran the ball 26 times for 100 yards.

South Kitsap (1-6, 1-6 in league) hosts Curtis in Week 8.

Klahowya (4-1, 1-1 in Nisqually League 1A) was scheduled to kickoff at 2 p.m. Saturday on the road against Bellevue Christian (0-5, 0-1).
