North East boys 3,200 relay, Harbor Creek record-setters highlight Erie County Classic

Kameron Chadsey is aware of North East’s generational success in cross country and long-distance track events.

Given recent results of its boys 3,200-meter relay that he’s anchored, the senior could find himself prominently mentioned in that lore.

Chadsey joined senior teammates Lucas Boyd and Riley Kordes, plus junior Aivan Vargas, for a comfortable victory during Thursday’s Erie County Classic at Harbor Creek’s Paul J. Weitz Stadium.

Last weekend: Which track and field athletes stood out at Saturday's sunny North East Invitational?

While their time of 8 minutes, 5.97 seconds wasn’t a meet record, it was low enough to get the attention of other PIAA Class 2A foursomes who compete in that race.

Pa.milesplit.com is regarded as the most reliable website for statewide varsity track and field results. Going into Thursday, it listed the Grapepickers’ 3,200 relay time of 8:08.09 during the April 21 Butler Invitational as the lowest for small-school boys.

“I’m so proud we’ve been able to come out and hit some solid (times) this season,” Chadsey said. “Coming from North East, you know of the strong (upperclassmen) here from your freshman and sophomore years. Our coaches always pushed us hard to be in the position where we’re now those special seniors.”

“We want something special for our school, and for ourselves.”

Chadsey also warned he and his 3,200 relay teammates expect Thursday’s victorious time to be a temporary low. Their goal, he said, is to break the eight-minute mark during next weekend’s District 10 meet at Slippery Rock or, even better, the PIAA meet at Shippensburg.

Top Performers, May 7-13: Which Erie-area high school athletes are having a big week?

Host Huskies had record-setters

Two Harbor Creek seniors set meet records during their last on-campus track and field appearances.

One was anticipated, that being Nick Krahe. The West Virginia University football recruit was favored to win the boys shot put thanks to a top-seeded distance of 55 feet, 8 inches.

Krahe’s best attempt in Thursday’s final landed a half-inch short of his season best. However, it was still long enough to eclipse the 55-2 meet record former North East thrower Spencer Cornelius had held since 2011.

Incredible was how Dave Uglow, Harbor Creek’s throwing coach, initially described working with Krahe in recent seasons.

“Kids like Nick only come along once in a while,” Uglow said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had someone like him. And he’s an even better person than an athlete, which is what’s made it so much fun to work with him. He gives it his all.”

Krahe, at 153-4, also was the discus gold medalist. That meant the Huskies won three of the boys’ field events.

The third was Brandon Konieczki, who extended the long jump record to 22-8. Fairview’s Tyler Sargent held the former mark of 22-5¾ since 2007.

Konieczki was confident he could beat Sargent’s record, even though it was based on an attempt that didn’t count during Tuesday’s Region 5 dual meet vs. Fairview.

“I jumped 22-11,” Konieczki said. “I fouled but I knew I had that in me, so this (record) is pretty exciting.”

McLane boys, LeBoeuf girls take team titles

Thursday’s third meet record also helped the General McLane boys finish first in the team standings. The Lancers compiled 139 points to Harbor Creek’s 107 1/2.

Ten of the Lancers’ points were from their first-place 400 relay. Lane Marquis, Jace Walls, Cooper Robson and anchor Kyle Birkmire combined for a lap in 43.17 seconds.

The race’s former record was 43.69, which Fairview had held since 2007.

Birkmire was a triple winner for McLane. He was the gold medalist for the 100 in 11.08 and the 200 in 22.69.

Alena Urbanowicz, another sprint specialist, was similarly vital to Fort LeBoeuf’s girls claiming that team title.

The Bison finished with 136½ points. Urbanowicz accounted for 30 of them when she won the 100 in 12.89, the 200 in 26.33 and anchored their 400 relay in 50.70.

Record eludes Owens, but not wins

No meet records were set during Thursday’s girls events, with Isabel Owens the only one anticipated to accomplish one.

Owens, a middle-distance runner for Fairview, had a seed time of 2:20.10 in the 800. The existing mark of 2:21.32 was set by Iroquois’ Kristina Junkin in 2015.

Fairview junior Isabel Owens, lower left, won the girls 800-meter run during the Erie County Classic Track & Field meet.

Junkin’s record still stood when Owens ran her two laps in 2:28.45. However, that time was still good enough for first place, as was her 5:32.45 performance in the 1,600.

“I’m not going to lie. I was looking for that (800) record, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen,” Owens said. “I hold myself to high standards. I’m not super happy with my times, but I’ll be fine.”
