No. 6 Texas stymies No. 2 Maryland to reach women's Elite Eight

SAN ANTONIO — Kyra Lambert scored on a fastbreak layup with 44 seconds left and made one of two free throws with 23 seconds left as sixth-seeded Texas upset No. 2 seed Maryland 64-61 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA women's basketball tournament Sunday night.

Maryland made just two field goals over the final 6:25, and missed six shots just in the last 90 seconds.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Texas players rushed the court, piling on top of each other. They then saluted the boisterous crowd of Longhorns fans that had made the hour-long trip from Austin to San Antonio.

Texas plays top-seeded South Carolina on Tuesday night, trying to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2003.

Longhorns star Charli Collier scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help shut down Maryland's high-powered offense. Collier has already announced she will turn pro as is projected by many to be the No. 1 pick in the upcomong WNBA draft.

Celeste Taylor, whose jumper in the final minute tied it at 59-59, finished with 15 points, Joanne Allen-Taylor scored 14 and Lambert scored 10, taking her last free throws with gauze in her nostril after taking an earlier blow to the face.

The Terrapins had the highest-scoring offense in the country during the regular season and averaged 99 points in the first two rounds before running into a Texas defensive wall that slowed the pace to a grinding halt.

Diamond Miller scored 21 points to lead Maryland (26-3).

Maryland was just 5 of 22 on 3-pointers. Katie Benzan, who led the nation at 51 percent, made just two, none in the second half. She finished with six points.
