No. 16 Vanoss boys survive close call with Coalgate (RECAP)
Feb. 22—VANOSS — When Coalgate's Seven Williams hit a baseline jumper with 4:30 left in the game, the Wildcats held a 22-21 lead over host Vanoss in a Class 2A District Tournament title game last Friday.
However, twin brothers Caleb and Cooper Treat made enough big plays down the stretch to help No. 16 Vanoss turn back Coalgate 34-25 and avoid a huge upset.
The Wolves improved to 15-11 on the year, while Coalgate dropped to 2-20.
There was far less drama in the girl's district title game as the Lady Wolves strolled past Coalgate 59-26. No. 6 Vanoss improved to 23-3, while Coalgate dipped to 3-20.
The Vanoss girls will face Walters (18-5) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Apache High School in a Class 2A Regional Tournament winner's bracket game. The Wolves play No. 10 Apache on its home court at 7:30 p.m.
The Coalgate girls will meet host Apache at 1 p.m. and the Wildcats will battle Walters at 2:30 p.m. in a pair of consolation contests.
BOYS
Vanoss 34, Coalgate 25
Jarin Factor hit one of two free throws for Vanoss after a steal to tie the game at 22-22 with 3:23 to play. Caleb Treat then put the Wolves ahead for good when he got free inside for a layup to put the hosts on top 24-22 with 2:22 remaining.
Tate Brown kept Coalgate close with his basket at the 1:22 mark to get the Wildcats within 26-24. But Cooper Treat got free for a back door layup just nine seconds later that pushed the Vanoss lead to 28-24.
Cooper Treat helped seal the outcome by hitting 2-of-4 free throws in the closing seconds.
Caleb Treat finished with a team-best 10 points for Vanoss, all in the second half and eight during a 14-7 VHS run to end the game. All four of Cooper Treat's points came in the fourth period.
Layne Throws hit a pair of first-quarter 3-point shots and also scored 10 points for Vanoss.
Tristian Trevathan led Coalgate with nine points and Kolten Magby was next with seven, including the only CHS 3-point basket of the game.
Vanoss finished a cool 6-of-15 from the free-throw line, while Coalgate sank 4-of-5 attempts.
GIRLS
Vanoss 59, Coalgate 26
Vanoss led 12-5 after the first quarter and then took control with a 23-6 surge in the second period to make it 35-11 at halftime. Vanoss outscored Coalgate 17-2 in the third period.
Avery Ellis led a balanced Vanoss scoring effort with 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Zoey Cagle was next with 13 points and hit three triples. Livi Ellis followed with 10 points, including a pair of 3-point baskets. Caidence Cross chipped in eight points for the home team, all in the first half.
Aubrey Manion led the Lady Wildcats with 15 points and made 3-of-5 free throws, the only ones attempted by Coalgate in the contest.
Vanoss made 4-of-8 free shots.
