GROUP 3

Mainland 5, Middletown North 4: The defending state Group 3 champion Lions (17-8) rallied when down 5-0 but saw their 10-game state tournament winning streak over two years come to an end.

Middletown North trailed 5-2 heading into the final inning and chipped away on Aldo Casale’s single and Ryan Frontera’s two-run home run with one out. But Mainland (14-13) reliever Ethan Mitnick, who took the mound in the sixth inning, retired the final two batters.

Middletown North had a spectacular finish after a rough start to the 2023 season, winning 15 of 18 games prior to Monday. The Lions opened the year 2-5.

GROUP 2

Rumson-Fair Haven 9, Seneca 0: The Bulldogs (22-5) earned their first trip to a state baseball final with an explosive seven-run first inning powered by Griffin Shenman's grand slam home run. Seneca (13-14) was the surprise winner of South Group 2 as the ninth seed.

Rumson-Fair Haven will play Pascack Hills (21-7) - which defeated Hanover Park 4-1 - Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Group 2 final in Hamilton.

GROUP 1

Buena 9, Point Pleasant Beach 3: Buena, which has won a school-record 27 games (27-3) this season, is back in the state final for the first time since 2014, when it won its only title (Group 2).

Point Pleasant Beach (23-6) scratched out its runs after falling behind 9-0 with sophomore Noah Banick's RBI single in the fourth inning putting the Garnet Gulls on the scoreboard.

3. Middletown North 10, 4. Lawrence 7: Sophomore Zachary Hamption went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs and pitched 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win, Colby McMahon went 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored a run, Dylan Briggs went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored two runs, Ryan Frontera went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs and Jason Quard had a hit and two RBI as the defending Group 3 state champion Lions (17-7) defeated the Cardinals (21-7).

Middletown North will host Mainland (13-13) Monday in a Group 3 semifinal.

Mainland, which was seeded ninth and was 9-13 when the state tournament began, defeated defending South 3 champion Delsea 6-4 Friday in the South 3 championship game.

Middletown North took command of Friday's game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth to build an 8-0 lead.

Quardt had a two-run single and McMahon, Frontera had run-scoring singles and R.K. Kernan a sacrifice fly in the third.

Briggs had a two-run single in the fourth and McMahon a two-run single in the sixth after Lawrence had pulled within 8-5.

Hampton allowed five runs, just one earned, on seven hits, struck out four and walked one.

Alipio Figueroa allowed two runs on five hits in the final 1 2/3 innings.

1. Point Beach 4, 3. Middlesex 1: Kyle Kolans and James Larsen combined to scatter seven hits and the Garnet Gulls (23-5) scored all their runs in the bottom of the second as they defeated the Blue Jays (17-9) in the sectional final for the second straight season.

Point Beach, which had never won a sectional title before last season, will host Buena (26-3) Monday in a Group 1 semifinal. Buena defeated Audubon 8-4 in the South Group 1 championship game Friday.

Kolans allowed a run on six hits, struck out two and walked three. Larsen allowed one hit, struck out three and walked one over the final two innings.

Noah Banick had a bases-loaded walk, Tommy Coroy a run-scoring infield single and Bryan Matuschat a two-run double to left. Matuschat went 2-for-3.

2. Ranney 4, 3. Bishop Eustace 3: Diego Taverez hit a go-ahead two-run home run to right center in the bottom of the fifth, A.J. Gracia belted solo homers in the first and fifth innings and Marcello Mastroianni pitched three scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and no walks as the defending Nonpublic B state champion Panthers (27-2) rallied to defeat the Crusaders (21-8).

Ranney will play at No. 1 seed Gloucester Catholic (22-7) Saturday in the sectional final. The Panthers recorded a dramatic come-from-behind 8-7 win in last year's sectional final on 2022 graduate Charlie Chropuvka's three-run home with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh.

Gloucester Catholic came-from-behind to defeat Ranney 9-8 in eight innings in a 2021 sectional semifinal.

4. Lawrence 3, 9. Matawan 2: Teak Toto's sacrifice fly plated the tying run and winning pitcher Kellen Moore's chopper scored Robert Kelly with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth as the Cardinals (21-6) defeated the Huskies (15-12).

Moore pitched a complete-game five-hitter with four strikeouts and a walk.

Matawan had taken a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI double by Jack Sassa and a run-scoring single by Joey Bodin.

Matawan pitcher Brandon Falco pitched a complete-game five-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk.

Lawrence, which is in a sectional final for the first time since 1974, will play at defending Group 3 state champion Middletown North (16-8) Friday in the sectional final.

Ocean 1: Jackson Hinchliffe (five innings, one run, five hits, five strikeouts, one walk), Owen O'Toole (one inning, no hits, two strikeouts, no walks) and Matt Bruno (one inning, one strikeout, no walks) combined on a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk and Owen Kenney had an RBI ground-rule double in a two-run first inning as the defending Central 2 champion Bulldogs (20-5) defeated the Spartans (19-8).

Rumson-Fair Haven is now 7-4 in one-run games and 3-1 in games with a 2-1 final score. It is 2-0 in one-run games in the state tournament.

Ocean pitcher Matt King pitched a complete-game three-hitter. He struck out eight and walked three.

Shane Garrett had an RBI ground-rule double in the fifth for Ocean.

Rumson-Fair Haven will host Spotswood (21-7) Friday in the sectional final.

Point Beach will host traditional Group 1 power Middlesex Friday in the sectional final. The Garnet Gulls defeated the Blue Jays in last year's sectional final to win their first sectional title.

SOUTH A

1. Red Bank Catholic 4, 8. Pingry 2: The patient approach paid off for the Caseys (22-5) in the bottom of the second inning in their win over the Big Blue (12-11)

That approach resulted in Pingry ace senior right-hander Jake Francis issuing five walks, two of which drove in runs, and throwing 44 pitches in the second inning as Red Bank Catholic scored three runs on just one hit to erase a 1-0 deficit.

Dylan Passo led off the winning with a walk. Matt Brunner followed with the only hit of the inning and a sacrifice bunt by Al Delia moved the runners to second and third.

A ground out to third by Christian Condon plated the first run of the inning before Max Dantoni, Alex Stanyek, Sean Griggs and Frank Scrivanic all walked consecutively with the walks to Griggs, who was down 0-2 in the count, and Scrivanic plating the second and third runs of the inning.

Red Bank Catholic, which had just two hits, did not have an RBI hit. Shane Andrus' sacrifice fly, which came after a throwing error on Griggs' ground ball and a walk to Scrivanic, plated the fourth run.

Pingry closed to within 4-2 in the sixth on a run-scoring dropped pop-up and had runners on second and third with two out, but reliever Steve Svenson got a strikeout looking to get out of the inning.

Svenson then retired the side in order in the seventh to pick up the save.

Junior right-hander Declan Leary pitched five-plus innings to pick up the win. He allowed two runs, just one earned, on six hits, struck out two and walked three.

Svenson struck out four and did not allow a hit.

Andrus, the Caseys' catcher, threw out two runners attempting to steal.

Red Bank Catholic will host No. 4 seed St. Augustine Wednesday in the sectional semifinal.

4. St. Augustine 5, 5. CBA 4, 8 innings: Joe Erace's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave the six-time defending South A champion Hermits (18-7) a dramatic win over the Colts (19-6-1).

St. Augustine tied the game in the seventh on a run-scoring wild pitch and a run-scoring error.

CBA had built a 4-1 lead as a two-run triple by Wyatt Hunt highlighted a three-run third.

CBA starter Chris Levonas allowed two runs un four hits and struck out nine and walked two in 5 1/3 innings.

St. Augustine came from behind to defeat Red Bank Catholic 6-5 in the 2021 South A championship game.

Hamilton East 2: Catcher Joey Bodin plated the go-ahead run with a squeeze bunt in the top of the fifth and threw out a runner at second attempting to steal for the final out, Andrew Gendi pitched a complete-game three-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks and no earned runs allowed and Sal Cassano and Eric Friedman had RBI bases-loaded singles in the second as the Huskies (15-11) defeated the Spartans (17-9) to advance to a sectional semifinal for the first time since 2016.

Matawan will play at No. 4 seed Lawrence Tuesday.

3. Middletown North 4, 6. Allentown 3: Dylan Briggs' single to center in the bottom of the seventh scored Ryan Frontera with the winning run as the defending Group 3 state champion Lions (15-8) scored twice in the seventh to rally and beat the Redbirds (16-9).

Frontera avoided the tag on the throw home on Briggs' single. A run-scoring ground out by R.J. Kernan tied the game.

Middletown North will meet 2021 Group 4 state champion Middletown South (13-12) Tuesday in a sectional semifinal.

The Lions have won eight straight state tournament games, dating back to the start of last season's state tournament.

7. Middletown South 4, 15. Northern Burlington 2: A two-run single by John Chiusano in the bottom of the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and Matt Silva added a run-scoring single to plate Chiusano later in the inning as the Eagles (13-12) defeated the Greyhounds (11-14) to set up a sectional semifinal matchup Tuesday at defending Group 3 state champion Middletown North.

The teams split two meetings in the first and second weeks of the season with each winning at home.

Middletown South senior right-hander Ben Schild struck out 12, walked one and allowed a run on five hits over the first 5 1/3 innings in his second start since he returned to the mound after he did not pitch from April 18-May 14. He got no decision.

Brendan Roche was the winning pitcher. He allowed a run on two hits and struck out one and walked one over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Chiusano was 2-for-3 with three RBI. He also had an RBI single in second. Silva was 2-for-3. Will Christopher was 3-for-3. Lou D'Alessio was 2-for-3 with a double and scored two runs

1. Rumson-Fair Haven 7, Bordentown 2: Owen Kenney had three RBI, Jack Riva drove in two runs, reliever Owen O'Toole pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and four pitchers combined on a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and seven walks as the defending Central Group 2 champion Bulldogs (19-5) defeated the Scotties (13-13) to advance to the sectional semifinal for the third straight season.

Kenney had a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first, an RBI fielder's choice in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Riva had an RBI double in the first after Reece Moroney's double and a run-scoring single in the second.

Spencer Hobson added a two-out RBI double in the fourth.

Moroney walked three times and scored three runs. Griffin Shenman went 1-for-1 with two walks and scored two runs.

Rumson-Fair Haven will host No. 12 seed Ocean Tuesday.

3. Spotswood 4, 11. Wall 3, 8 innings: Dylan Kartellas single to center with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eighth scored Casey Cumiskey with the winning run as the Chargers (20-7) defeated the Crimson Knights (13-14).

Cumiskey had tripled with one out. Two intentional walks followed to load the bases.

It was Spotswood's second straight win in eight innings over a Shore Conference team in the state tournament. It defeated Monmouth 1-0 on Monday.

Wall had tied the game on Mike Horowitz's RBI single in the sixth.

Spotswood pitcher Jackson Walsh struck out 10, walked none and allowed seven hits in a complete-game performance.

Spotswood will host No. 10 seed Delran Tuesday.

12. Ocean 9, 4. Carteret 2: Sophomore right-hander Tommy Kowaliwskyj pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out five and walked four, George Krenkel went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored a run, Shane Garrett went 2-for-4 with a double and scored two runs, Connor Tongring had a two-run double, Matt Richter went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Ben Robinson had a hit and an RBI as the Spartans (19-7) defeated the Ramblers (17-8) for their seventh straight win.

It is the first time Ocean has been to a sectional semifinal since 2016, when it was defeated by Hamilton North in the Central Group 3 final.

10. Delran 2, 15. Manasquan 1, 9 innings: Nick Merunka's single to center with two out in the bottom of the ninth scored Jacob Brooks and gave the Bears (14-7-1) the win over Manasquan (12-12).

Brooks had reached on an error with one out.

Jack O'Shea had an RBI single to right in the first and pitched 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball with seven strikeouts and four walks for Manasquan

Delran pitchers Joe Duffield (six innings, four hits, one run, nine strikeouts and five walks) and Vinny Cooney (three innings, two hits, six strikeouts, two walks) combined on a six-hitter and 15 strikeouts and seven walks.

2. Shore 2, 7. South Amboy 1, 8 innings: Joe Santi's single in the bottom of the eighth drove in the winning run as the Blue Devils (13-12) defeated the Governors (13-7).

Senior Donovan Hughes picked up the win by hurling 2 1/3 innings of one-hit, no-run relief with five strikeouts. Shore starting pitcher Christian Simonsen struck out 10 and allowed a run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Simonsen also went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

T.J. Minner was 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and scored a run. Santi also stole a base.

Shore will host No. 3 seed and traditional Group 1 power Middlesex Tuesday.

Southern 5, Vineland 2: Brady Lesiak hit two-run home runs in each of the first two innings, went 4-for-4 and pitched five innings of two-run, three-hit ball with four strikeouts and three walks to pick up the win on the mound, Niko Diamantopoulos had an RBI single in the first and Roger Dreher picked up the save with two scoreless, hitless innings with two strikeouts and no walks as the Rams (16-8) defeated the Fighting Clan (18-9) and advanced to the sectional semifinal for the first time since 2017, when they won South Group 4.

Southern will host No. 11 seed Eastern Tuesday.

Gracia scored three runs, had a hit, walked three times and an RBI as the Panthers (26-2) opened defense of their Nonpublic B state championship with the win over the Wildcats (7-14).

5. CBA 7, 12 Camden Catholic 0: Senior right-hander Brennan O'Keefe hurled a one-hitter and struck out six and walked three and James Nitti's RBI single in the bottom of the first was the only run O'Keefe would need as the Colts (19-5-1) defeated the Irish.

Camden Catholic's only hit came when the second batter of the singled after a leadoff walk. O'Keefe got out of that inning with a force out at second and a double play.

The Colts put the game by scoring five runs in the third. Wyatt Hunt had a sacrifice fly. Will Fahey and Matt DiFeo had RBI singles and Fahey and DiFeo scored on a passed balls.

Hunter DelGuercio added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Fahey went 2-for-2.

CBA will play at St. Augustine Friday in a sectional quarterfinal and a rematch of last year's nonpublic South A championship game, won by St. Augustine.

Ocean 13, Freehold 3, 6 innings: Shane Garrett went 3-for-5 with four RBI and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to pick and allowed a run on two hits and struck out four to pick up the win and Dylan Lazar went 2-for-4 with three RBI and pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four and walked none as the Spartans (18-7, 10-4) defeated the Colonials (3-21, 0-14).

Matt King was 2-for-2 with two walks and scored three runs. George Krenkel was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Ben Robinson was 2-for-4 and Nick Case had a hit and scored two runs.

Pinelands 8, Southern 7: Hunter Theuret's single to left with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the seventh gave the Wildcats (4-13) the win over the Rams (15-8).

Pinelands scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh as it erased a 7-4 deficit. Dan Maher's sacrifice fly with one out in seventh tied the game 7-7.

Kaden Inman went 3-for-5 with two RBI; Jake Fowler went 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Nate Sofield went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored three runs for Pinelands.

Ray Mulhern was 3-for-4 with a walk, Brandon Brown was 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and scored a run and Niko Diamtopoulos was 2-for-5 for Southern.

Christian Zabotka began the winning rally by drawing a walk. Jake Schwinger singled to left and Erik Johnson was hit by a pitch before Silva walked on a 3-2 pitch.

Manalapan will play at No. 5 seed East Brunswick Thursday in a sectional quarterfinal.

11. Wall 5, A.L. Johnson 4: Zach Szatkowski's double drove in the go-ahead run and capped a five-run fourth inning that wiped out a 4-0 deficit and Szatkowski also pitched a complete-game four-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks as the Crimson Knights (13-13) defeated the Crusaders.

Jake Howlett began the fourth inning rally with a solo home run for his eighth round-tripper of the season. Truir Brown had an RBI double to make it 4-2 and T.J. Legere's two-run double tied the game 4-4.

Szatkowski's double scored Legere.

Howlett went 3-for-4 with a double and the home run. Brown had two doubles.

Wall will play at No. 3 seed Spotswood Thursday in a sectional quarterfinal.

Prime went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored a run.
