Nike releases Jackie Robinson Air Force 1 sneaker to celebrate MLB legend's legacy

Jackie Robinson Day is an annual celebration of the legacy of Robinson, who became Major League Baseball'sfirst Black player era with his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.

Nike released the Jackie Robinson Air Force 1 sneaker on Saturday, April 15th, to "celebrate the legacy of No. 42 and honor Jackie Robinson's monumental impact on the game and the world," exactly 76 years to the day Robinson broke MLB's color barrier.

The Air Force 1 shoes feature Robinson's iconic No. 42 jersey number, which MLB retired in 1997 across all major league teams. The shoes also have the Brooklyn logo on the tongue, red baseball stitching, gum soles and "change the world" laces.

The sneaker was released Saturday morning and quickly sold out, retailing at $120.

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton said the Nike sneakers are "nasty," in a good way. He said all the details "represents (Robinson) to the fullest." Buxton is one of many MLB players who will wear the sneakers Saturday before taking the field in No. 42 jerseys and other commemorative gear on Saturday.

Last year, Nike celebrated the 75th anniversary of Robinson's MLB debut with the release of the special-edition Jackie Robinson Nike Dunk Low. The pair featured baseball-stitch laces, No. 42 on the heel and insoles, along with his famous words from his debut: "I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me. All I ask is that you respect me as a human being."
