Nickel: Do we subscribe to Pat Bev? The answer has to be yes

One of the heroes of the Milwaukee Bucks' win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night, Pat Beverley, was a man in motion all night, first for the 26 expeditious minutes in which he ripped off a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and soon after the final buzzer in the hallway of Fiserv Forum, where he was warmly greeting a few friends but clearly bee-lining to the exit.

His Bucks teammates were still in the locker room, barely collecting their thoughts; Pat Bev was dressed and energized and ready to go.

Can’t blame him. With Boston on Tuesday and Orlando on Wednesday, this is the Bucks' final back-to-back of the season. His next game would be 20 hours later.

But, you know, hero. Big minutes. Snaps Bucks' four-game losing streak. Playing hurt. With an incredible story of his wrist pain, by the way...

Hey, Patrick, can you stop a second for a couple questions?

“Do you subscribe to my podcast?”

I listen to your podcast.

“Then no, if you don’t subscribe, no, I’m not talking.” He puts his head down and keeps walking down the hallway.

Wait. Are you serious? Yes, I subscribe and I listen. Want me to prove it?

Pat Bev turns around. He comes back. He talks for one minute. His podcasts are about an hour and 2 minutes, but he comes back.

“I’m hurtin’,” Beverley said. “I’m hurtin’.”

Beverley returned from two injuries – the first to his wrist about two weeks ago, then to his ankle shortly after that – to start for the Bucks on Tuesday and help dismantle the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics.

Beverley said he relied on his mental strength to push through for Milwaukee’s 104-91 rout of the Celtics, and ultimately he was fine with his injuries.

But his presence was felt immediately. Starting in place of veteran guard Malik Beasley, a coach's decision by Doc Rivers, Beverley contributed to Milwaukee's dominant first quarter. He sliced through Boston’s defense for two layups and added two big defensive boards as well. Milwaukee crushed the spirit of Boston in the first 12 minutes, surging to a 34-21 lead.

But Beverley said the Bucks relied on their defense – holding Boston to an anemic 8-for-26 shooting in the first quarter – and that spurred their offense.

“We was fortunate to get stops today,” Beverley said, and he was back on his way.

Now back to his podcast, the The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone and Barstool Sports. (Oops, there's an April 10 episode up already; maybe that was the reason for Mr. Beverley's postgame haste. He even promoted his pod on his postgame national TV interview!)

With wrist feeling better, Pat Beverley breaks out

Anyway, Beverley previously had credited his spiritual coach and leader for helping him with his hand. It's in episode No. 78, 38 minutes in. Here's what Beverley said, and his chaplain's responses according to Beverley, in italics:

“Holy Week I get on plane. My chaplain, my spiritual coach I like to call him, his name is Mike Rosas – mind you he’s the younger brother of a guy named Gersson Rosas; Gersson is the guy who came and got me from overseas to play for the Houston Rockets – Gersson Rosas is actually the same guy that got hired by Minnesota and got me to go to Minnesota; his brother is my spirit coach.

“He text: 'How’s hand.'

"OK.

“'I want to pray over hand.'

"Ah, OK.

“'I’ll call you after the game.'

"Alright. OK. Remind me, because sometimes I forget. 'No problem.'

"He reminds me. But ... when he reminds me, I look at the setup I’m in – it's hundreds and hundreds of dollars on the gambling table. We playing cards on the plane.”

Pat Bev host: "He’s going to go in and flip the tables over like Jesus at the temple."

“I got to take the call though. Got to. You can’t say no. Answer: I’m on the plane.

“'I don’t even need you to say anything. I will take it from here. Put left hand over right wrist.'

Pat Bev host jokes: Left foot, right stomp.

Beverley indicates he's on the plane, placing his left hand – maybe holding his phone – over his injured right shooting wrist while others are asking him to return to their game.

“He say long prayer. He goes, ‘Holy Week, I’m gonna show you how good Jesus Christ is. Move your hand; do you feel anything?

“No Chap.

“'Move it up and down; do you feel anything?'

“No.

“'Tell me if you feel anything throughout the whole week'.”

This is while the Bucks were flying to Atlanta, before the Hawks game March 30.

“Amen, amen. Hang up call. Next game 18-5-5. I start.”

Pat Bev host: Bring him on the road with you.

Beverley was cleared to play in the previous game against New Orleans, logging 7 minutes, and he said Rivers “was kind of hesitant” to give him a starter’s share of minutes. But with Damian Lillard out against the Hawks, Beverley scored 18 points as the fill-in starting point guard and added five rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes.

The Bucks play their final regular-season game at home Wednesday night against Orlando. Since being traded to Milwaukee, Beverley has five starts in 23 games.
