Nick Saban says he played golf with Ken Griffey Jr. at Augusta National
Alabama football head coach Nick Saban did an interview with WJOX’s Cole Cubelic for the “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” radio show Wednesday before Saban played in the Regions Tradition Pro-Am at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
Saban casually mentioned that the day before he played golf at Augusta National Golf Club with Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.
“I just played Augusta yesterday with Ken Griffey Jr.,” Saban said in response to a question about his putting at the PGA Tour Champions event in Birmingham, Alabama.
Cubelic responded, “Just throw that out there — humble brag.”
“He was my partner, thank God,” Saban said of Griffey.
Griffey played in MLB from 1989-2010 with the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox.
“I met him a couple times,” Saban said of Griffey. “He has a couple sons that were prospects. I got to meet him along the way. But he’s a really good guy and really good golfer. We had a lot of fun. I had — most of the time people complain about three-putts, but when you have multiple four-putts that’s something you don’t even want to talk about.”
Saban was then asked how often he plays at Augusta National.
“I usually play once a year,” Saban said. “It’s a unique place. I really enjoy going there. There’s great people there, and it’s a fun golf course.”
Saban attended the Masters Tournament this year as well as in 2021.
