Nicholls football beats Lamar, clinches Southland championship and FCS playoffs berth

Nicholls football will compete for a national championship this season.

The Colonels (5-4, 5-0 Southland Conference) not only defeated the Lamar Cardinals (5-5, 4-2) on Saturday night, 37-24, they clinched at least a share of the SLC season championship. By virtue of owning head-to-head tiebreakers over Lamar and Incarnate Word, Nicholls has clinched the league's automatic berth in the FCS playoffs.

Despite starting the season 0-3, head coach Tim Rebowe turned the Colonels around once conference play began, going on an undefeated run. It's the sixth conference title in program history and the fifth since moving to Division I in 1980. For Rebowe, it's his fourth playoff appearance in nine years in Thibodaux.
