Arbitration hearing dates for restricted free agents and their respective clubs have been set from July 20 to August 4, 2016 in Toronto.

A lot of these cases tend to be settled before they reach this point with a few going through arbitration. For all involved this at least creates a deadline on a deal getting done.

Some of the bigger potential arbitration cases involve Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie (July 29), Washington Capitals forward Marcus Johansson (July 20) Tampa Bay Lightning forward Alex Killorn (July 20) and St. Louis Blues forward Jaden Schwartz (July 20).

Barrie’s situation has drawn the most interest this summer. Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic has said he wants to re-sign the offensive blueliner to a long-term contract, but Barrie may be overpriced for Colorado’s plans.

In an interview with the Denver Post last month, Sakic looked at Barrie going to arbitration as just another lever under the collective bargaining agreement to reach a contract.

“I’d like to do a long-term deal with Tyson. If that doesn’t work out, it’s expected he’ll go to arbitration,” Sakic said. “Either way, he’ll be here.”

The Edmonton Journal recently pointed out that the Edmonton Oilers will continue to look at Barrie as they try to revamp their blueline. Barrie had 49 points last season and a career-high 13 goals. He’s coming off a two-year $5.2 million contract. The Avalanche have $7,759,407 of salary cap space with just Barrie and Mikhail Grigorenko listed as RFAs. Grigorenko also filed for arbitration.

The type of contract Killorn receives may have an impact on the Lightning and what they can pay restricted free agent forward Nikita Kucherov. Killorn notched 40 points last season, but had 13 points in 17 playoff games. Killorn made $5.1 million on a two-year deal.

Tampa has $12,979,167 of salary cap space left this offseason. Also Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat will be restricted free agents next summer so the Lightning need to be careful on what they pay their remaining RFAs so they can lock up the rest of their core moving forward.

Schwartz is coming off a two-year contract worth $4.7 million. He had 63 points in 75 games two years ago, but injuries limited him to 22 points in 33 games last season. He will likely receive a large raise.

Last summer Johansson was rewarded a one-year $3.75 million deal through arbitration.

The Capitals have $8,038,207 in salary cap space to re-sign Johansson and defenseman Dmitry Orlov, who didn’t file for arbitration.

The Detroit Red Wings will also be busy trying to lock up steady defenseman Danny DeKeyser who is coming off a two-year $4.375 million contract along with goaltender Petr Mrazek. The Red Wings filed for arbitration with Mrazek, who took over the starting job last season and will likely get a large raise off his $737,500 salary from a year ago.
