NHL-Highlights of Monday's NHL games

March 7 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Monday's National Hockey League games. Capitals 2, Ducks 1 (shootout) T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom scored in a shootout to give the Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night in front of a sellout crowd of 17,174 at the Honda Center. Washington goalie Braden Holtby grabbed two shots during the shutout and finished with 27 saves. Andre Burakovsky scored in regulation for the Capitals (49-13-4), who earned their third victory in four games. Flyers 4, Lightning 2 Shayne Gostisbehere made more franchise history on Monday and the Philadelphia Flyers snapped the Tampa Bay Lightning's nine-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory at Wells Fargo Center. Gostisbehere scored two markers to give him 14, breaking Behn Wilson's record for most goals in a season by a Philadelphia rookie defenseman set in 1978-79, when he recorded 13. Earlier in the season, Gostisbehere set the point-streak record by a Flyers rookie at 15 games. Sabres 4, Maple Leafs 3 (shootout) Sam Reinhart scored the shootout winner as the Buffalo Sabres edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Monday night at Air Canada Centre. Buffalo has won both meetings between the two clubs this season. Mark Pysyk, Jack Eichel and Evander Kane had the other Buffalo goals while Chad Johnson made 30 saves to improve to 3-0-1 all-time against the Leafs. Bruins 5, Panthers 4 (overtime) Lee Stempniak scored with one minute left in overtime as the Boston Bruins earned a wild 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers on Monday night at the BB&T Center. The Bruins, who also got two goals from Patrice Bergeron, blew a 4-1 lead before getting the game-winner on Stempniak's 17th score of the season. Sharks 2, Flames 1 (overtime) Joe Pavelski scored 19 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Brent Burns set up the goal and also scored his 24th of the season early in the first period to help the Sharks (36-23-6) bounce back from a 4-2 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. Avalanche 3, Coyotes 1 Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist, Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves in his return to the net, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-1 on Monday night. Mikhail Grigorenko also had a goal and an assist and Shawn Matthias scored for Colorado, which got a valuable two points against a struggling team. Kings 5, Canucks 1 Two third-period goals by Jeff Carter and another one by Vinny Lecavalier allowed the Los Angeles Kings to break open a close contest and cruise to a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night at Staples Center. Carter scored at 11:39 of the third for a 3-1 advantage before Lecavalier added his sixth this season on a breakaway 39 seconds later. Carter scored again -- his 17th goal of the season -- with 3:57 left in the contest on an empty-netter for the 300th of his career.
