NFL roundup: 49ers place Hunter on IR; Giants sign 2 RBs

San Francisco 49ers running back Kendall Hunter is out for the season with a knee injury suffered in Sunday's victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Hunter and wide receiver Kyle Williams, backups with regular roles in the offense and on special teams, were placed on injured reserve. Williams has a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. Hunter reportedly has a torn left Achilles, an injury the 49ers reported as an ankle injury.

Hunter is the primary backup to starter Frank Gore, and the 49ers haven't used Brandon Jacobs or rookie LaMichael James in the base offense. James has yet to be active for a game in 2012. Jacobs has one carry for one yard in his first season with the 49ers. His first carry was negated by a penalty.

"You saw (Jacobs) in the game," coach Jim Harbaugh said of Jacobs' two carries against the Saints. "He had two carries, one where he really worked his way for a three- or four-yard first down and we had a penalty on that play as well. Yeah, he's been doing some good things and showing some good things."

San Francisco activated running back Jewel Hampton from the non-football injury list and placed him on the active roster.

---The New York Giants signed running backs Ryan Torain and Kregg Lumpkin to provide depth with Andre Brown going on injured reserve with a broken fibula and Ahmad Bradshaw continuing to battle a foot injury.

The Giants waived offensive lineman Selvish Capers and released running back Joe Martinek from the practice squad.

Torain has rushed for 1,011 career yards in 20 games over three seasons. The injury-plagued back played in two games for the Denver Broncos in 2008, was out of the league in 2009 and then played in 18 games for the Washington Redskins from 2010-11. He is averaging 4.2 yards per carry for his career.

Lumpkin has played for the Seahawks, Buccaneers and Packers. He was primarily a third-down back who also played on special teams coverage units in Tampa.

The defending Super Bowl champions also took a look at former Steelers running back Mewelde Moore and former Colts running back Joseph Addai.

Addai was the biggest name. The 29-year-old running back has been unemployed since being released by the Colts after the 2011 season. Though he has twice totaled 1,000 rushing yards in a season, injuries have limited him to just 12 games over the past two years.

The Giants also placed rookie defensive tackle Markus Kuhn on Injured Reserve Tuesday with a torn ACL.

---San Francisco 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman agreed to a five-year extension Tuesday that runs through the 2018 season.

The team didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but an NFL.com report said it was worth $45.25 million, $25.5 million of which was guaranteed.

"NaVorro epitomizes what we look for in a 49er," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "We're excited that the All Pro tandem of [Patrick] Willis and Bowman will be together in red and gold for years to come."

Including Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith, the 49ers now have all four of their starting linebackers under contract through at least the 2015 season.

The 49ers took Bowman, 24, in the third round of the 2010 Draft. He has recorded 337 tackles, four sacks and three fumble recoveries in three years, including a team-leading 129 tackles this season.

---Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe are big fans of Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

Charles was so impressed that he approached Manning for an autograph after the game, according to a KCTV report.

The station broadcasted a video of Charles waiting for Manning as he left the stadium, following Kansas City's eighth straight loss.

"My mom wanted this autograph," he told the station.

Bowe posed for a picture with the former Super Bowl MVP.

"It's Peyton Manning," he said. "Who wouldn't want a picture with him?"

---President Barack Obama helped saved General Motors. Fans in Dallas would like to see do the same thing with the Cowboys.

A man from Ft. Benning, Ga. has petitioned President Obama to remove Jerry Jones from power, according to a Dallas Morning News report.

"We, the Citizens of the Great State of Texas, and Dallas Cowboys fans worldwide, have been oppressed by an over controlling, delusional, oppressive dictator for way too long, reads the petition, which is published on the White House website and filed under 'Human Rights.' "Request the Executive Branch's immediate assistance in removal of owner and GM, Jerry Jones. His incompetence and ego have not only been an extreme disappointment for way too long, but moreover, it has caused extreme mental and emotional duress."

At least 25,000 signatures are required for a petition to receive consideration. As of Tuesday, NFL.com reported that fewer than 500 U.S. citizens have signed.

---The Philadelphia Eagles season took two more hits Tuesday.

The team announced that wide receiver DeSean Jackson will miss the rest of the season with multiple broken ribs, and defensive end Jason Babin has been released.

Jackson was hurt on a 2-yard end-around run in the first quarter of Monday's 30-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The Eagles are already without quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy, who are both dealing with concussions.

Jackson leads the Eagles with 45 catches for 700 and two touchdowns.

The Eagles also parted ways with Babin, who made the 2011 Pro-Bowl.

"We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years," Reid said. "We wish him all the best as he continues his career. By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of younger guys in the defensive line rotation."

---According to the report, an officer saw Suh's Land Rover traveling at a high rate of speed and passing several cars on the right side. As the lane was about to end, Suh's vehicle cut over, barely missing the car behind him.

However, the case still has not made its way to the court, and it's not certain that it will.

Suh has been accused of driving recklessly in the past. Last month, Suh was accused of sideswiping his car and driving off. But no ticket was issued. Last year, Suh was involved in a crash in Portland, Oregon. A female passenger who was injured is suing Suh.

Guard/center Andre Gurode was signed by the Chicago Bears, who placed right guard Lance Louis on injured reserve Monday.

The Bears also waived defensive tackle Amobi Okoye and made several changes to their practice squad, signing offensive lineman Derek Dennis and wide receiver Dale Moss and terminating the contracts of wide receiver Raymond Radway and guard Chris Riley. Gurode is a 10-year veteran who has started 127 of 151 career games. A second-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2002, he last played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2011, starting five of 13 games at left guard. Gurode is a five-time Pro Bowl player and twice was named All-Pro as a center for the Cowboys.

Okoye had just seven tackles and one sack while seeing action in six games. The 25-year-old was a first-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2007 and appeared in 22 games for the Bears over the past two years.

---The Jacksonville Jaguars placed running back Jalen Parmele (groin) and cornerback William Middleton (concussion) on season-ending injured reserve and released wide receiver Micheal Spurlock safety Chris Harris.

Cornerback Antwaun Molden and wide receiver Quan Cosby were signed to the 53-man roster, running back Jordan Todman was signed off the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad and wide receiver Toney Clemons was signed off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad.

Defensive end Ryan Davis was signed to the Jaguars' practice squad.

Parmele had been assuming a larger workload in the backfield with Maurice Jones-Drew still sidelined by a foot injury, but was injured during Sunday's 24-19 victory over the Tennessee Titans. He finishes the season with 143 yards on 40 carries. Rashad Jennings will again become the primary ballcarrier until Jones-Drew returns, with Todman likely to see action as well.

Middleton, a fourth-year player, started three of 10 games this season and finishes with 20 tackles and a pass defensed.

Spurlock is tied for sixth on the Jaguars with 14 receptions this season, and has also return six punts and six kickoffs.

Harris is an eighth-year veteran who saw action in only five games this season, producing one tackle.

Molden was a third-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2008 and has played in 48 career NFL games. Cosby was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie in 2009 and has played in 42 career games while spending time with the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts as well.

Todman was a sixth-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2011, but has yet to have an NFL carry. Clemons was a seventh-round pick by the Steelers in April and spent the first 12 weeks of his rookie season on their practice squad.

---Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer will start at the position Sunday in Baltimore, head coach Mike Tomlin announced.

Tomlin cited consistency and health as reasons that he chose Dwyer.

"He's been consistently the most productive guy," Tomlin told reporters. "I think we have a large enough body of work to be able to identify that at this point. Obviously, we've been working at less than ideal circumstances with the rotation and the shuffling of those guys due to health and lack of production. But over the course of the last several weeks, it's obvious that he is healthy and he is the most productive of the group."

The Steelers (6-5) trail the first-place Ravens (9-2) by three games.

Starter Rashard Mendenhall fumbled twice in a loss to the Cleveland Browns. Dwyer, Chris Rainey and Isaac Redman also fumbled, as part of an eight-turnover afternoon.

Dwyer leads the Steelers with 429 yards rushing in eight games.

In other news, Tomlin said wide receiver Antonio Brown is expected to play, and he's encouraged by the progress of safety Troy Polamalu from a right calf injury.

---The Richmond City Council approved an economic-development package Monday that will allow for the construction of a $9 million training camp facility for the Washington Redskins, according to a Richmond Post-Dispatch report.

The agreement will mean $6.3 million in commitments to city school facilities over 10 years. The camp could be completed by as early as July 2013.

Bon Secours Richmond Health System will be a major training camp sponsor.

---Defensive tackle Fili Moala and nose tackle Josh Chapman officially had their 2012 seasons come to an end as the Indianapolis Colts placed both on injured reserve Tuesday.

Defensive tackle Kellen Heard, who has played in 23 career NFL games, was signed. He appeared in eight games with the St. Louis Rams this season.

Chapman was activated from the physically unable to perform list Nov. 12, but was inactive the past two weeks as the Colts evaluated to see if the rookie from Alabama had recovered enough from a knee injury to play this season.

Colts head coach Bruce Arians announced Monday that Moala had suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Moala, 6-4, 310 pounds, started in all eight games he played in this season and recorded 21 tackles (11 solo) and one pass defensed. He was inactive for three games.
