Each week during the season we here at cover32 will take a look at the injury news around the NFL.

With teams preparing for the regular season, rosters are beginning to take shape with returns and high use of the PUP list.

NFL Injury Updates: Thursday August 31

Arguably the biggest piece of news this week. Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater tore his ACL in practice and has been lost for the entire 2016 season.

Also dislocating his knee on the practice, the injury was apparently bad enough in person for the team to end practice early. The Vikings were looking to challenge in the NFC North but that dream may have just ended.

The New England Patriots have placed running back Dion Lewis on the PUP list meaning that he will miss out on at least the first six games of this season.

Chalk up another loss for the Patriots. Lewis was seen by many as the top running back in the New England stable and his loss could have an effect on early season success of the Patriots’ run game.

Potential 49ers breakout candidate Bruce Ellington tore his Hamstring in practice last week and has now been placed on the team’s season-ending Injured Reserve list.

While not that big of news considering that he isn’t yet a star player. However, Ellington has been billed as a potential breakout candidate from Chip Kelly’s offense this season with Kelly frequently praising the receiver.

Offseason signing Ladarius Green has been placed on the PUP list by the Pittsburgh Steelers and will miss out on at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

Signing a four-year, $20 million dollar contract this offseason in Pittsburgh, Green has yet to even make the field for the Steelers due to headaches related to his past concussions.

A spot of good news, Arizona Cardinals’ star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu will be ready to go for week one according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Having not played at all this preseason, Mathieu’s return will definitely be good news for Cardinals’ fans with the team facing off against Jimmy Garappolo and the Patriots week one.

Starting linebacker Justin Houston will start the Kansas City Chiefs season on the team’s PUP list while he continues to rehab from offseason knee surgery.

Missing time last year with knee problems, Houston had surgery during the offseason to help fix his ACL. Missing out on the first six weeks, the Chiefs will definitely hope Houston is ready for week seven.

Dallas Cowboys starting linebacker Sean Lee sat out practice earlier this week with a knee injury but head coach Jason Garrett has now said that it’s not serious.

The news is good for the Cowboys defense. Lee has been a major player since his arrival and after missing the 2014 season with knee problems, Lee looks to be ready for week one against the Giants.

Detroit Lions tight end Eric Ebron is unsure of his status for week one of the regular season as he continues too recover from an ankle injury.

With Calvin Johnson now retired, Ebron’s role on offense could become even more important. Without him on the field, Matthew Stafford will have one less key target to throw too.

No word yet on Cleveland Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert who sustained a concussion during the first half of their preseason game against Tampa Bay.

This could be a major loss for the Cleveland Browns if Justin Gilbert does not recover soon. Though the Browns are deep in depth at corner, Gilbert’s loss will still have an adverse effect on the defense.
