NFL Draft analyst's view of Canton native Charles Turner III, who shares his dream situation

As the NFL Draft approaches, Canton native Charles Turner III is aware the biggest criticism he faces is his size.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 303 pounds at the combine, Turner, who starred at LSU, was one of the lighter offensive linemen at the combine.

Draft analyst Lance Zierlein of the NFL Network broke down Turner and how he projects as an NFL center.

“Turner is an undersized center-only prospect who relies on his tenacity to overcome his limitations,” Zierlein explained in his scouting report. “The LSU offensive line was a physical unit and Turner fit right in. While he held his own for the most part, the step up in competition could strain his ability to keep up as both a run blocker and pass protector. He has good length and is a decent athlete but will need to improve his technique and show that he can play with enough contact balance to grind out reps on the NFL level.”

According to Zierlein, Turner’s strong attributes include his hand placements, staying on his blocks, and being able to go toe-to-toe against a massive nose tackle while staying on his ground. At his size, Zierlein said, Turner needs to improve on his footwork combinations, especially while double-teaming. He also has to stay square while dealing with delayed blitzes and twists.

Turner was one of the eight LSU players who participated at the NFL Combine earlier this month. he didn’t run the 40-yard dash or bench press, but he did other activities. He had a 31-inch jump in the vertical jump and jumped 9 feet, 1 inch in the broad jump. He also participated in field drills. Turner will take part in the LSU Pro Day on Wednesday.

Charles Turner III looks up to recently retired Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce

Typically, NFL prospects are compared to different current or former NFL players. Turner doesn’t mind being compared to Cleveland Heights native and long-time Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce, who recently announced that he is retiring after playing 13 years for the Eagles. When asked about Kelce during media availabilities at the Combine, Turner paid his respects.

“Jason Kelce was a special player,” Turner said at the Combine. "He’s a nice, gritty … He’s a great offensive lineman. I hate to see him go. He was one of those guys I looked up to as well, but you know, he had a long, great career and I thank him for what he has done for the game of football, position of center.”

A dream scenario for Turner would be the Eagles drafting him.

“It’s not too far from home and Kelce, who I kind of play similar to and is a Northeast Ohio kid who played center, he just retired so it’ll be a great, great place for me," Turner said. "I feel like that could be my dream situation.”

The NFL Draft is April 25-27, in Detroit.
