Yoenis Cespedes continues destroying baseballs in Miami

Maybe Yoenis Cespedes still thinks he’s in Philadelphia.

Maybe despite being a few hundred miles south of Citizens Bank Park, the New York Mets’ outfielder still has the taste of cheesesteak in his mouth. Or maybe he hasn’t noticed the difference between Market Street and Ocean Drive.

That would certainly help explain the ferociousness with which he attacked the Miami Marlins on Thursday, a close-your-eyes-and-hope-he-doesn’t-swing kind of night for the pitching staff the likes of which we haven’t seen Cespedes cause since, well, Tuesday.

In a Thursday night game that stretched into early Friday morning, Cespedes crushed two solo home runs, drew two walks and struck out twice in a 9-8 victory over the Marlins in 16 innings.

That makes for five homers in Cespedes’ last three games — a stretch that started with three moonshots in five innings against the Phillies on Tuesday.

He went 1-for-2 the following night in Philly with a double, one walk and two runs batted in.

So you can understand why his debut in Miami this season seemed a bit like deja vu.

No one is going to claim he’s the best hitter in the game or is unleashing some transcendent batting technique that allows him to only hit dingers and doubles. But there is some serious magic happening right now when Yoenis Cespedes steps in the batters box.

And sure, you can make an argument that the last few pitchers he’s faced included the likes of Clay Buchholz, Adam Morgan and Wei-Yin Chen, but that doesn’t detract from the towering home runs Cespedes is belting.

What does matter is this: the hottest hitter in the game this week is destroying a lot of fine baseballs and we don’t mind watching him do this for as long as he wants.

Feel free to join us in awe.
