UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva II Does $6.2 Million Gate
The Ultimate Fighting Championship released the UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 attendance and gate figures following Saturday’s event in Las Vegas.
15,650 spectators filled the MGM Grand Garden Arena generating a gate totaling $6.2 million.
Middleweight champion Chris Weidman defended his title for the first time in the rematch with former titleholder Anderson Silva in the main event. Weidman was dominant in the opening round, knocking Silva down with a right hand inside the clinch. He softened Silva up with punches and elbows for the better part of the opening round.
Silva came out in the second frame asserting his striking ability. He threw an inside leg kick that Weidman checked with his knee and Silva crashed to the canvas holding his leg and grimacing in pain. He suffered a broken leg just above the ankle and was removed from the cage on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to the hospital to undergo immediate surgery.
In the event’s co-main event, women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey secured her eighth win in a row by arm bar submission. The first time she and Miesha Tate met in March 2012, Rousey submitted Tate in the opening round. On Saturday, it took three rounds to finish with her patented move. The fight earned the women Fight of the Night honors.
In heavyweight action, Travis Browne solidified himself as a contender with his first-round knockout of former UFC titleholder Josh Barnett. In other main card action, lightweight Jim Miller submitted Fabricio Camoes by arm bar in the first round while Dustin Poirier knocked out Diego Brandao in a catch-weight fight.
