Sean McDermott leading the pack in the Buffalo Bills coaching search

Despite coming off a poor season in Carolina this year, Sean McDermott looks to be the new favorite to land the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. Having interviewed with the Bills last week, it was recently revealed that the interview went extremely well with one commentator even calling the meeting a “strong one” for both sides.

With no other news like this emerging for the other interviews done by Buffalo, it could be safe to assume that we have a new leader in the Buffalo Bills head coaching search. While Anthony Lynn remains near the top of the charts in terms of odds, McDermott has a lot of things that Lynn doesn’t have. Mostly, it all comes down to experience.

While Anthony Lynn does have the support of the team’s players, McDermott has the experience edge and the coaching know how. Being in the NFL for the past 18-years, McDermott knows the ins and outs of this league, especially from a defensive standpoint. Given that this is the Bills biggest area of need at the present, McDermott should get the nod here over Lynn.

Going back to his experience coaching, McDermott has held a coordinator position since 2009 when he was the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia. Having continued on as the DC in Carolina when he arrived in 2011, McDermott helped transform the Panthers into one of the league’s best defensive units. Outside of the past season, McDermott’s defenses speak for themselves.

Having helped lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl is another area that should help him. Knowing what it takes to get the team to the promised land is an invaluable skill and something the Bills may prioritize, especially since they haven’t even made the playoffs since the turn of the century.

With McDermott as the head coach, there would be only a small learning curve. He knows what it takes to run a defense and should he bring in Mike McCoy as his offensive coordinator as the rumors would suggest, then the offense would also be placed in stable hands.

On the flip side, Anthony Lynn has only served 14-games as an offensive coordinator. While he would provide stability for this team, Lynn does not have the experience necessary to lead this team.
