Salary Cap moves that could be made by the Philadelphia Eagles

With free agency right around the corner for the NFL and it’s teams, it is that time of year when players begin to get nervous. Potentially having signed some big contracts in the past, front office personnel look for players that either underperformed or carry too much salary to keep going forward. In the case of the Philadelphia Eagles, that means cutting certain players in order to provide room to negotiate this offseason.

Using a neat little tool from spotrac.com, fans across the league finally have a chance to make their own roster choices. While the tool is only used for salary cap purposes, it does give us some insight into what the front office of our favorite teams goes through. Taking advantage of this tool, I thought it would be fun to show off some of my own roster cuts and re-negotiations that I feel the Eagles could perform this offseason.

For the purpose of this article, we will go along with spotrac’s system of choice when it comes to restructuring deals. When selected, the base salary of the player is converted down to a minimum given their current deal. While there is some wiggle room in the middle, it does show what could happen when certain deals are re-negotiated this offseason.

Starting off with the plain jane cuts, I have chosen Mychal Kendricks, Jason Kelce, Ryan Mathews, Dorial Green-Beckham, and Bryce Treggs as my cuts. While the team is likely to make more of these moves, I have chosen to focus on bigger names or players that had some significant first string time this season with this list.

The two biggest surprises on this list may be center Jason Kelce and Dorial Green-Beckham. As far as Kelce goes, rumors are already swirling that the team is thinking about releasing him. If hit has gotten to that stage, he is almost certainly one of the deadweight cuts this offseason.

DGB on the other hand is a young player with loads of talent. However, if the Eagles are going to overhaul their receiving corps this offseason, DGB could be a casualty given the one million savings it would give the team.

On the restructuring front, big names like Jason Peters lead the way. Also included in this portion of the list is Vinny Curry, Chase Daniel, Brent Celek, and Connor Barwin. In total between the cuts and these potential deals, the Philadelphia Eagles would save a whopping $28 million for a total salary cap hole in the range of $40 million. With the team needing to make some free agent moves, this added cap space should provide some front office comfort in Philadelphia.
