RIO DE JANEIRO – Cody Miller captured a bronze medal and set an American record in the 100-meter breaststroke race Sunday night at the Rio Games, unable to overcome the world record-setting pace of Great Britain’s Adam Peaty.

The 24-year-old Miller, a first-time Olympian who specializes in breaststroke, finished in 58.87. Peaty set the world record at 57.13, while South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh won the silver medal after finishing in 58.69.

An undersized underdog, Miller has been a late bloomer after dominating the Big Ten in breaststroke while at Indiana. He also beat Kevin Cordes, the U.S. champion who failed to medal after finishing at 59.22.

Miller beat the previous U.S. record of 58.94 set by his Cordes at the U.S. Trials.
