NFL roundup: Reid may be headed to Arizona, still talk of Philly

Andy Reid may be on his way to a new job, but he is still the buzz around his old workplace.

The Philadelphia Inquirer and KTVK-TV in Phoenix reported Tuesday that Reid is "very close" to being named the Arizona Cardinals' coach.

Reid was fired Monday as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles after 14 seasons. The Cardinals' job opened up when Ken Whisenhunt was fired the same day.

The Cardinals planned to interview their defensive coordinator, Ray Horton, either Tuesday or Wednesday to meet the requirements of the NFL's Rooney Rule for minority hiring.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported Reid already has begun compiling a staff, including former Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Schurmur, who also was fired Monday.

Meanwhile, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick criticized teammates after Reid was fired and accused players of showing a lack of effort.

"It's all about focus, dedication and commitment," Vick told CSNPhilly.com. "Until you get guys who are willing to better themselves week in and week out and want to win, you're not going to win. And I haven't played with guys like that. It's unfortunate for Coach things turned out the way they are. It could have been a lot better. This locker room could have dictated that."

Vick missed several games this season because of a concussion and rib injuries. He lost his job to Nick Foles but returned to start the season finale when Foles was out with a concussion.

---Syracuse coach Doug Marrone will interview for the vacant heading coaching jobs with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns, according to ESPN.

Marrone is 25-25 at Syracuse in four seasons, but the Orange won just 26 games in seven previous seasons. Marrone also has NFL coaching experience. He was a position coach with the New York Jets from 2002-05 and offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints from 2006-08.

---Mike Holmgren said he would consider returning as a coach if one of the seven NFL teams with a vacancy contacts him, according to ESPN.

Holmgren, 64, left his executive position with the Cleveland Browns during the season when Jimmy Haslam took over as the new owner.

"If anyone is interested, I'll listen," he said, though he added that he is not aggressively looking for a job.

---The San Francisco 49ers have signed kicker Billy Cundiff after a tryout at the team's facilities.

Cundiff beat out Justin Medlock, who also received a tryout, and gives the 49ers two kickers on their roster.

San Francisco was looking to either sign a second place kicker or replace David Akers, who has struggled this season.

Akers has missed a field goal in six of the 49ers' last eight games, including a loss and a tie with the St. Louis Rams. He has made 29 of 42 field goals, despite starting the season with an NFL record-tying 63-yard field goal at Green Bay.

Cundiff has made 75.5 percent of his career field goals during his 10-year career, but has struggled since missing a critical 32-yard field goal for the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game last season that spurred his departure from Baltimore.

---Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said he does not expect Devin Hester to retire.

Hester said Monday that he would walk away after the team fired coach Lovie Smith.

"Devin didn't come by," Emery said. "I saw the comments. I felt for Devin. Again, I take all that in context of these guys had played a long time. ... Devin came in as a draft pick with Lovie. I certainly understand the emotion. There will be a time when his emotions clear."

---The Buffalo Bills promoted Russ Brandon to President and Chief Executive Officer.

The team is also retaining general manager Buddy Nix, according to ESPN. While Nix is keeping his job, a transition will reportedly be made at some point to Doug Whaley, the assistant general manager and director of player personnel.

Also, the Bills are seeking permission to interview Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy for their head coaching job, ESPN reported Tuesday.

McCoy, 40, is already a candidate for the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals coaching jobs.

---New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora told the Michael Kay Show in New York that he does not expect to be back with the team next season.

The 10-year pro does not like his role as a situational pass rusher and believes he is a starter.

---The Houston Texans placed linebacker Darryl Sharpton on injured reserve because of a hip injury.
