MLB roundup: Leyland announces his retirement
Jim Leyland is ready for retirement, and on Monday he stepped down as manager of the Detroit Tigers.
Leyland, who turns 69 in December, helped turn around the Tigers in seven seasons as manager, including three American League Central Division titles and two World Series appearances. The Tigers went to the American League Championship Series three straight years.
Leyland reportedly told his players following a Game 6 loss in the ALCS at Boston on Saturday night that it was time for someone younger to step in and do the job.
Leyland was 700-597 (.541) and won at least 90 games three times. He was hired entering the 2006 season to take over a team that went 71-91 in 2005.
Two coaches on Leyland's coaching staff, Lloyd McClendon and Gene Lamont, have managerial experience and are expected to be considered for the job.
---Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who was hampered by several injuries this season, may need surgery to repair a groin strain, general manager Dave Dombrowski said.
Dombrowski said Cabrera was dealing with a Grade 2-3 groin strain through the late stages of the season. Cabrera will see a specialist and may need surgery this offseason.
It is unclear whether surgery might prevent him from being available for spring training or the start of the 2014 regular season.
--- St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who has 20 strikeouts in 23 innings in the playoffs, will oppose left-hander Jon Lester for the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the 2013 World Series on Wednesday.
Lester is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 19 1/3 innings pitched in the 2013 playoffs.
--- Although Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly acknowledged on that his 2014 contract option vested with a first-round playoff victory over the Atlanta Braves, he is still unsure whether he will be the team's manager next season, multiple media outlets reported.
Mattingly seems to be interested to obtaining a multiyear contract extension. He said the Dodgers put him in a difficult position with the players by having him manage the 2013 season while in the final year of his contract.
Mattingly's option reportedly is worth $1.4 million, but the team has made no announcement about his future with the Dodgers.
---The Dodgers reached agreement with 26-year-old Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero on a four-year, $28 million deal, MLB.com reported.
The deal could be worth up to $32 million if bonus incentives are reached.
