Mets 5, Diamondbacks 4, 13 innings

NEW YORK -- Andrew Brown's two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning early Tuesday morning lifted the New York Mets to a stunning 5-4 comeback win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in front of what remained of a crowd of 22,240 at Citi Field.

Cody Ross homered leading off the 13th inning to give Arizona the lead, but Josh Satin began the winning rally with a one-out double off Josh Collmenter (4-1), who then intentionally walked John Buck to bring up the pitcher's spot.

With the Mets out of position players, pitcher Matt Harvey pinch-hit for David Aardsma and bunted the runners over. Another intentional walk, this one to Omar Quintanilla followed and Brown laced a 1-2 pitch into the left-center field gap as Satin and Buck scored to set off a wild celebration by the Mets.

Brown's hit made a winner out of Aardsma, who earned his first win in the majors since July 28, 2009, when he was pitching for the Mariners.

The Mets (34-45) have alternated wins and losses in their last five games. The Diamondbacks (42-40) lost their fourth in a row and for the seventh time in their last eight games.

The Diamondbacks had been shutout since the second inning -- and had only gotten three runners as far as second base before Ross homered to left on the second pitch he saw from Aardsma.

The Mets trailed 3-0 through six before they scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to force extra innings. But they left the winning run at second in the ninth and at third in the 10th and left the bases loaded in the 11th.

Overall, the Mets stranded 18 runners, including 12 in scoring position.

Satin, Quintanilla and Marlon Byrd all had three hits for the Mets while Wright and Young also had two hits apiece.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer in the first and Aaron Hill went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Diamondbacks. Ross was the only other Arizona player with two hits.

Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley danced out of trouble throughout 5 2/3 shutout innings, during which he allowed six hits and four walks while striking out seven. Arizona starters have gone 23 straight games without recording a victory.

Mets starter Shaun Marcum allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts over six innings.

The Diamondbacks needed just nine pitches in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead off Marcum. Hill was hit by a pitch with one out, and Goldschmidt followed with a long two-run homer to left-center field.

Arizona extended the lead in the second, when Didi Gregorius singled, went to second on Miley's sacrifice, advanced to third on Gerardo Parra's groundout and scored on Hill's single.

The Mets threatened against Miley in the first, second and fifth innings, but they left the bases loaded in the first and stranded two in the second and fifth.

Wright's RBI single in the seventh scored Eric Young, who drew a leadoff walk against Brad Ziegler. That made it 3-1, and the Mets closed the gap to 3-2 on Young's two-out double in the eighth. That scored Quintanilla, who tripled one out earlier just beyond a diving Parra.

Parra hit the dirt on the warning track face-first and remained on the ground for several minutes before walking off under his own power.

In the ninth, Byrd's one-out double off J.J. Putz hit off the left field wall just below the orange home run line. Satin followed with a single to left field, and Mets third base coach Tim Teufel waved home Byrd. The throw from Jason Kubel -- who entered the game after Parra got hurt -- beat Byrd by a step, but catcher Miguel Montero dropped the ball with the tying run. Satin raced to second on the play.

NOTES: The Mets and Diamondbacks paid tribute to the 19 firefighters who died Sunday responding to a forest fire in Yarnell, Ariz., by hanging "Yarnell 19" uniforms in their dugouts. A moment of silence was also held prior to the game. The Diamondbacks said players and coaches will wear black arm bands on the right arm of their uniforms for the four-game series in New York. Upon returning home Friday, the team will unveil a memorial patch that will be worn the remainder of the season. ... The Diamondbacks placed right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill on the disabled list with a right hip contusion and recalled right-handed pitcher Chaz Roe in a corresponding move. Cahill was hit on the hip by a line drive against the Marlins on June 19, and while he left that start after one inning, he made his next two starts as scheduled but allowed 12 runs in 9 1/3 innings. ... Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said infielder Willie Bloomquist, who hasn't played since he was hit on the left hand by a pitch last Wednesday, is getting better. ... Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada, who has been on the disabled list since May 30 with a right quad strain, played nine innings for the rookie-level Single-A Gulf Coast Mets on Monday and will next move his rehab to Triple-A Las Vegas. ... Mets minor league outfielder Brandon Nimmo won the fan vote for the final spot on the U.S. Team roster for the All-Star Futures Game, which will be played July 14 at Citi Field.
